Borders Bookstore to Close in Bowie MD

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

Borders Bookstore in Bowie is ClosingBorders Group, Inc. helped put countless small bookstores out of business nationwide over the past few years.  After filing for bankruptcy protection today, 200 of their own stores will be closing and 6000 people will lose their jobs.

In Maryland, the Bowie, Largo and Kensington stores are on the chopping block.  The Bowie store website indicates that closing will be complete before the end of April.

Borders Bookstore in Bowie is located at 4420 Mitchellville Rd. at the Gateway Center west of the Route 50/Route 301 interchange.  My family will certainly miss this convenient location and friendly staff, and we'll continue to shop at Borders in the Annapolis Mall.

Margaret - I was a little surprised to hear that Borders had filed bankruptcy. I guess ebooks might make bookstores a thing of the past.

Margaret, I think the beginning of their last chapter and end goes back to when they were sold years ago to large corporations with management that did not read either books or the writing on the wall. It is not great news for the local communities or their employees. Santa Fe has two Borders and I am still waiting to learn whether both, one or none will close their doors here.

From what I understand they (Borders) did not get on the ebook train soon enough. I guess the time will come when the only place left for a true reading experience will be the library.

Margaret, with people doing so much living on line, all manner of given's will be lost. I still miss the little book store that used to be along the bus stop in down town Waterbury. It was a true experience, like those little English shops in the movies.

I'm sure that Barnes and Noble can't be far behind with an annoucement of their own.

Robert, you're right.  I guess it was just a matter of time.  With readers turning to online books, I can't imagine bookstores being able to carry a huge inventory of books in their brick and mortar locations.

Emily, a list has been published of the stores slated for closing.  It was a link in the story I read yesterday but unfortunatly I didn't save it.

Martha - I even wonder about libraries... They are, after all, a publicly funded institution.  Will they too become obsolete?  Probably in our grandchildren's lifetime.

Ed - I don't remember ever having one of those "little book stores" I see in the movies.  I guess that's what comes with living in a large metropolitan area dominated by shopping centers and box stores.

Cindy - 'Afraid you could be right about that.  I guess we should be hanging on to our books for our great grandchildren - they'll be collector's items.

Hi Margaret~ We have 6 locations closing in Colorado.  I totally agree that at some point REAL books are going to become collector's items.

Hi Margaret, it's sad to think 6000 more will be out of work. As Donna said, we are losing stores here too.  I still like my "real books" and love to browse through any book store.

Another casulty of the online marketplace.  With every good there is a bad, but that is life in our digital world.

Hannah - I think you're right.

Donna - What a shame!

Mary - I can't put my finger on why, but I prefer Borders over Barnes & Noble.  Fortunately, we'll still have one fairly close, but it's a shame to see the Bowie store close.

Simon - So true.

I wonder how Barnes & Noble is doing.  It seems to be really busy in White Plains.  They have started with their eReader..and they have some neat things like game nights and game sales etc.  It might be just very local and our shop is doing well.

While I love our ereaders, is there anything more luxurious than sitting back with a lovely hardback book?  Bookstores in Oregon are reducing in size as well, because of the lack of sales.  I must confess however, as a stager, bookcases are often something I'm saying that needs to be decluttered and I haven't seen that change!

It's sad to see them close.  I'm not surprised because so many have gone to ebooks, plus there is competition from barnes & noble just down the road.  I think bookstores will still be around but I do think they will need to change the way they do business.

Frank, that's probably a good idea.  Who knows if the remaining stores will be able to honor those gift cards.

Ruthmarie, there are stores closing all over the country.  I hope yours is spared.

Margaret, I'm not much of a reader but I do enjoy book-shopping for the grandkids.

Stacey, You're right about Barnes and Noble, but I've never been to their Bowie store because Borders location is so much more convenient and the parking is better.
