Remember when I was afraid of the Dentist?

"Remember when I was afraid of the Dentist?"  That is what my daughter said to me as we walked into Smiles 4 Children for her 6 month check up today.  At 5 (and a HALF), this is her 3rd visit to the dentist.  She walked in with no fear, no trepidation.

Dentistry for Children

Their marquee says it all, Smiles4Children is Dentistry for Children.  Located at 1134 N Rolling Road near the corner of Rolling Road and Route 40 in Catonsville, just down the street from the Double TT Diner, the combination dental/orthodontic office is a Dental Haven for kids.

If you, like me, have horrible memories of going to the dentist as a child, this is the place to start your kids off on the right tooth!   We have never had to wait for more than a few minutes on the way in, but sometimes it has been hard to get my daughter OUT afterwards!  The arcade and the two level play house with a slide help to entertain waiting siblings or kids as parents check in or out with the friendly and competent admin staff.

Karen AdminDentist playhouse

The entire staff from the admin folks, to the hygenists, to the clinical staff and the dentists themselves have an obvious love for kids.  They are patient, kind and efficient.  The whole experience is geared toward making the kids (and parents) feel comfortable.   Kids get their choice of toothbrush color and flouride flavor. Headphones are provided so they can watch the TV's while getting their treatment.

After treatment, each child get their pick of stickers and get to pick from the prize drawer.Picking Stickers Prize drawer

The staff answers questions, interacts with the kids (and parents), and makes suggestions for better dental hygiene.

If you are looking for a place to get your kid's dental experience started out right, or repaired after a bad experience, Sydney and I HIGHLY recommend Smiles4Children.  They have an Ellicott City, MD office too!  Start your kids out here early (or late) and you too will smile when they say "Remember when I was afraid of the Dentist?"

Deborah,  I think that part actually takes Sydney the longest!  So many choices!  The prizes are just the icing on the cake though, it's the caring professionals there that create the whole experience.

Vickie, We started Syd at 3.  I think it really helps the comfort level!  One of my sister's had such a bad experience as a kid, that by the time she went to a dentist many years later she needed sedation dentistry just to get a cleaning!  Luckily she found a great dentist who made her very comfortable and she doesn't need "the little blue pill" any more!

Scott, It is truly a wonderful experience for the parents and the kids.

Margaret,  Thank you for the amazing compliment.  I was blessed with some really good teachers for both parenting and "capturing the experience"!

Krista, By the time we left there I was ready to make my own appointment!

Chirag, It really is a fabulous atmosphere!

Bridget--I can just picture Sydney all along the way since I had the opportunity to meet her in person last month.  Kudos on link back to your blog site.  Great PR for both you & the dentist.

Thanks Mary.  She is pretty animated that is for sure!  The whole office is really great. We came to them on a recommendation and they are only a few minutes from the house!  I would drive an hour for this experience for my daughter.  My experience as a child at the dentist was horrible, luckily I found a great dentist myself (another blog?!)

I totally agree with "Remember when I was afraid...)  My children have been going to Dentistry for children for about 19 years!  I started in Catonsville when my oldest daughter was just 6 years old.  Now 6 children later, we are on our last child who is thirteen and even though we now live in Carroll County, we travel to the Ellicott city office to see Dr. Ginsberg.  That daughter of mine now has her own daughter who will be going to dentistry for children!

Growing up and being in the military, my dental experiences were not the best, and to this very day I have a pretty good fear of the dentists chair.  I was determined that this fear would not be part of my children's experiences.  So when I found Dr. Ginsberg I knew this would be our dentist for my children's young lives.  The only regret that I truly have is that there comes a time when they are no longer pediatric patients and have to move on.  However I believe that the great care and wonderful experiences that they have had at this wonderful place will make them realize that the dentist is nothing to fear, and they will always have the memories of the terrific staff at Dentistry for children as an example of how excellent care should be, and know they will never settle for anything less!

As for me, well I cant wait until my grandaughter starts to go there!

Mary,  You are so sweet and encouraging!  Thanks!

Dental Marketing, Glad you like it!

Rosalie, I hope that your daughter fared well after her visit and that she is healed in both body and spirit!

Bridgette, Great name!!  Thanks so much for sharing your experience with this fabulous dentist.  My sister was deathly afraid until she found a great dentist for adults.  Please contact me if you would like a referral.

Just having an arcade and play house in the waiting area is genius. The worst part of a dentist visit might just be the waiting around in anticipation (even for adults!). Anything to get the kids' minds off of sitting in the chair is brilliant. Looks like a great office! Grace | http://toothworks.com

Remember when? haha Well, I am still afraid of the dentist and I am in my twenties! Of course I go to the dentist. I am fine to have my teeth cleaned. But I sure do not like drilling done. It's funny because I would really like to find a cosmetic dentist and maybe get some veneers. I am glad to her your daughter is not afraid anymore! When I was a kid I remember my dentist having a prize drawer as well! Things like that make it so much better for kids I think. I need to get my courage and call a cosmetic dentist soon.

Angela,  Dentist offices have come a long way from fish tanks and magazines for sure!

Bob, they have head phones too!  It's a great way to drown out the drill sounds!

Anita, When I was a kid, my dentist was one that gave dentists a bad name!  I didn't want that for my daughter, so I found a great team!

Grace, there is not much time for waiting.  My daughter is often disappointed when they take us in too quick!

Jessie,  There are some great dentists out there who will get you through the procedures painlessly and comfortably.  Ask them about sedation dentistry when you call to check them out.  My sister used to need sedation for a  routine cleaning.  Now, her fear is gone and she doesn't mind the dentist at all.  She goes every 6 months now!  Get recommendations!

Growing up my sisters and I loved visiting the dentist for our check up because we were able to watch a movie while our mouth was being cleaned and if we were EXTRA good we got a prize. It's important that the child is not intimidated while entering the office because then it makes the experience not as enjoyable. I also love how it was mentioned that the siblings got to play with the toys that the dentist office provided because then it will help them to want to come back for their own check up.

I do not remember looking that happy when I went to the dentist when I was her age. This is a great idea. The kids will have a fun time and the parents won't have to be right by their side. I would still love a prize!

I actually had some really great experiences at the dentist as a kid. They were always very caring and made sure to not do anything without letting me know first. I recall my dentist having something similar to the prize drawer as well. Your daughter is adorable by the way.
