seedsThat is the theme this year’s 3rd Annual Pennsylvania renewable energy & sustainable living festival in Kempton, PA.

Since the weather was supposed to be beautiful all weekend here in the Lehigh Valley, a friend if mine suggested that would be a great excuse to be outdoors and enjoy the fresh air with Taliesen.  Along with that, we can learn how to be a little more green.

Throughout the day, there are different workshops discussing energy topics such as solar power, solair power, recycling and building green.

We also got to see some transportation alternatives.  Besides the Toyota Hybrid car that you can buy a chance to win, there were several converted cars.  Some run electric, some run on vegetable oil.  Taliesen was especially interested in the solar powered tractor.

With plenty of food (served on biodegradable plates), activities for children, live entertainment, and information, it was worth the trip to Kempton this weekend.

They're always trying to put oil platforms in the gulf.  What I don't understand is why they don't build the platforms and put wind generators on them.  (do you think I just oversimplified the whole fight?)

There's a contest now to submit WV videos for a chance to win a Camry hybrid.  Do they have one for every state??  Hmmm.

Grif.... it's hard to get the electricity from the wind generator into one's gas tank.

Ann - glad you had a good time.  You look lovely in that 'American Flag dress'.

Chris--Don't listen to Rob, one would think that they could figure is out.

Sarah-You could make a video staring AR members. I think it would be very comical

Rob-I don't look nearly as lovely as you rr

At least as of a few years ago I believe, coal was responsible for 50% of our electricity generation in the US.

We should not confuse the issue of electricity (coal, solar, wind, etc...) with the issue of OIL.

Wind generators have been proposed in our shoreline areas (OCEANS) for years... and they do not need an oil rig by any means to make this happen. It's cost and in the case of the one proposed off of Cape Cod...politics...as Ted Kennedy for one, said something to effect that it ruins the view.

There are many articles on the subject... I remember the Kennedy objection and was just friggin' shocked... as he was a proponant of wind power...until it hit his backyard....

Check this out.  I pulled it off by random Google choice.

Oh, and COAL....

http://www.powerscorecard.org/tech_detail.cfm?resource_id=2

The nation's fleet of over 100 coal plants is responsible for 57 percent of the electricity generated in the U.S., more than any other single electricity fuel source.

Coal is typically burned to create steam, which is then piped at high pressure over a turbine, causing it to rotate, producing electricity. This steam electric system is a common one also used with other fuel sources, including oil, natural gas, geothermal, biomass, and even some solar-fueled systems.

What are the environmental issues?

The popularity of coal is largely due to its low cost.

Nevertheless, coal power plants are responsible for 93 percent of the sulfur dioxide and 80 percent of the nitrogen oxide emissions generated by the electric utility industry.

Looks like Rob is doing his research. I was told that coal was responsible for 80% of all electricity. Thanks for the facts. Maybe you could tell me why the push for ethanol to replace gas. I was told it takes 2 gallons of oil to produce 1 gallon of ethanol. Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? Especially when it makes corn prices higher, which drives up the cost of food.
