Are home stagers worth every penny? I think so. An answer to a consumer's question.

On one of my blogs outside Activerain I received two questions/comments about home stagers. Here they are.

From James:

Hi Pamela! I think this is a great idea. I have some questions about using a home stager. Is it really worth it? I have seen some articles by real estate agents stating its only used to hide problems. Is this true? Thanks.

From Bob:

Home staging is a complete waste of time. Its ridiculous. It's just another useless profession trying to make money off of someone who's got enough on their plate already.

I have heard that some realtor's think staging is only used to cover up problems inside of a house, but I DO NOT agree with that at all. I have seen many vacant homes sit on the market for months and months and then when a stager comes in and helps transform it the home sells. Why? Most people have trouble visualizing their belongings in an empty home.

You want the buyer's to be able to imagine themselves living there. Most consumer's feel that vacant homes seem cold or uninviting.

Not the way you want buyer's to preceive your property. You want them to think of it as warm and welcoming. Home stager's help you accomplish that whether its heavy or light staging.

I think their profession is needed and warranted. I do not think they are trying to make money off of someone. In most cases I think they take away stress because the homes sell faster when they are staged.

In 2006, StagedHomes.com looked at the sales history of 200 properties staged by its members. Homes listed for sale prior to staging sat on the market for an average of four and a half months and sold within just over a week afterward. Homes listed for sale after staging sold within 32 to 42 days. In either case, the homes sold for an average of $26,000 more than expected.

Home stagers please feel free to put links in the comments section to your websites so that consumer's have places to see the difference home staging can and does make.

Hi Pamela,

I think staging a home is a very good thing, I really do appreciate their efforts and hard work.

Hi Anthony. I agree. I still have to really talk them up to get my clients to even consider it. Hopefully that will change soon, but i think a lot of it has to do with the publics misconception. :)

Hi Pamela, I think you are right on with your comments.  Preparing properties to be market ready just makes a lot of sense - especially in today's market.  I notice you have a little sign welcoming all your Alberta visitors.  I'm from Calgary, Alberta Canada.  If this is the Alberta you are talking about - thanks for the welcome.  Betty

Pamela: Thanks for the truth about home staging (and the link). Clients who agree to stage are usually pleasnatly surprised just how nice their home looks at the end of the staging. If it impresses the homeowner think what it will do for the prospective buyer......Anyone who has additional questions about homestaging can visit our web site at: www.transitionaldesigns.com

Hi Cheri. Thanks for addressing this question. And no problem with the link. :)

Hey lady

I left a comment about it on your outside blog as requested ;) I also am going to post it on my blog since it's such an interesting comment from Bob! Oh, and to James, here is the answer:

Apparently, A Good Stager Is the Buyers' Biggest Enemy And We May Cost You $5645

Cheers,

Cindy ;)

Thanks Cindy! I sent this blog link to James and Bob and asked them to keep looking at it for the next couple of days to give more stagers a chance to respond. :)

Pamela - I had no idea you were promoting staging in such a big way so thank you...every word helps the whole. Here is a link to how2homestage.com where agents and sellers alike can get the tools they need to stage themselves. Stagers are not always available in every area and not everyone has the cash flow needed to get the job done yet every listing needs to be merchandised.

Again, thank you for your support.
