I consider Todd Carpenter a friend. He's insightful, unabashed and as transparent as you're going to get while leading the social media efforts for one of (or is it THE) largest trade organizations in the United States.

(I'm glad to see he considers me the same.......a friend anyway, you'll see how I know that after reading his article)

In your March issue of REALTOR® Magazine, the cover story is written by Todd. He does a masterful job of making the case of why less is actually more when it comes to social media. I don't think everyone is going to agree with his opinion, but he does a really good job of making his case. If nothing else, this article should give you pause to think about how you are using the amazing social tools at your disposal and does your strategy align with the inherent strengths of these platforms.

I've been thinking about this same thing since I saw Todd leave an update on his Facebook page a couple of months ago. It's probably time for me to reign in my connections so those I do have can be more meaningful. I've always used 'lists' on Facebook in the past to achieve what Todd talks about in the article. After reading his article, I may be re-evaluating that strategy.

If you only have time to read one article today, make it this one:

Bob,

I totally agree with Todd's assertion that less is more.  For me that also goes for the territory that I work in my market.  There is simply no way I can be an expert on 500 square miles!

Bob,

Great post! Just printed out the article and will take a look at it.

With social media, we are always learning.

Make it a great day!

Bob, thank you for sharing this.  It makes a lot of sense to me, as I've been wondering about the value of friending everybody I'm remotely connected with on Facebook and Linked In.

Bob,

Todd (and you) make some good points. We have been very focused in our social media (campaigns... if you will). Never did have a vision for shear numbers.

Have a great weekend!

Steve

I agree. I know on Facebook I hide people who constantly make comments and fill up my page.

Bob, "Dunbar's Number" and "Mackay 66" are interesting to give consideration to. I had not heard of the Mackay list before, and even if you don't take it end to end, it does give you something to think about for those tagged "friends". BTW, I miss the avatars on yours and the AR blog pages - comments just aren't the same without seeing the commentor. hope the devs get that solution soon :)

I do not friend agents.  Why?  They are my competitiion.

WhenI do get a request I use it as an opprotunity to open up a dialogue with that person.  Are they an old aquaintance or a prospect.

Bob - I'm not sure that I agree with Todd 100%... but I do have a strategy that works for me:

I try to connect to people on one network, like Activerain... get to know them, comment back and forth with them

follow them on Twitter

see if they are active on LinkedIn, and connect

and THEN connect on Facebook last.

I think Todd did "nail it" with this article Bob. He provides some great insight about making stronger bonds than just having a diluted "friends" list. Well worth the read.

Great article and expresses the way I've been dealing with Facebook, though I thought I was probably a dinosaur in the way I think about it.  Glad to see that I'm not and that friend collecting is truly not a useful hobby on Facebook.

Just read the article...and I couldn't agree more.  I've been operating under that principle since day one.  ;-)

I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, but from what you say I believe I share his philosophy, too.  And believe me, I get tons of business from my simple blog and FB.  I remember the 1st RainCamp in Seattle when you told us that if we just focused on three social networking sites - FB, AR and LinkedIn, that is ALL WE REALLY NEEDED for success.  That was an epiphany for me, and I have focused there, simply, and seen HUGE results.  Just made a HUGE connectionthrough LinkedIn that is unbelievably valuable!  For me, less IS more.  I'm just an old dog learning new tricks, it's not hard when you keep it simple - and consistent. Before AR I was overwhelmed with just the thought of technology and social media.  Thanks for all you do and share, it has meant the difference between success and failure for my business.

i very much agree.  By limiting your friends on facebook and limiting the social networking sites you actually create more of a networking sphere and a much more qualified sphere .

Dear Bob,

Thanks for the reference to the article - REALTOR® Magazine: Less is Definitely More

It is a challenge to keep up with all the daily work and the social media.  But fun ...

For me, AR has been a life enhancing experience for me.  AR gives me a base to pull knowledge and progress daily.

I posted my first blog yesterday.  All of the skills needed to post were things I learned from AR Univ (Steven) and also other AR community members!

Did a FNMA sale this week - also a first - and used the SEARCH on AR to "study" the process before making the Client's offer to the Listing Agent.

Must admit - I love ActiveRain!

Have a happy day -
Lynn
