I went to this year's Art Splash in Carlsbad today, just one of the many things to do here. - I'm sorry I missed previous years of this terrific outdoor art-focused event for folks of all ages (but I have only been here for a couple of years). This is the 5th year for this event and it just keeps getting better.

Carlsbad has a number of festivals and outdoors activities (2 major arts fairs, a business expo, the 10-concert series TGIF Jazz in the Parks in the summer, to name a few), more so than any other town I have lived in, and it is great fun to experience the diversity of activities that are available throughout the year. Unless you buy something they are all FREE and very well attended.

We did not make it to the Taste of Carlsbad, which was held in conjunction with Saturday's portion of the 2-day festival (yesterday). But I understand from good friends that this was a true gustatory adventure - there are so many good restaurants and creative foodies around here, and the $20 goes to benefits art programs in Carlsbad (I know we are not yet making into Gourmet or Bon Appetit as a food capital like LA or San Francisco but we are well on the way).

Being a foodie myself, I really appreciate the opportunity to try new foods and learn about new places to explore on behalf of my stomach (who, I must admit, has some fairly discerning tastes). So I'm sorry I missed the Taste of Carlsbad this year- but there is always next year. And I can still enjoy the many restaurants in town.

The chalk art was AMAZING. There are just no words to express what I saw, so you will have to just enjoy the pictures. There were violin makers, sand sculptors, dancers, musicians, lots of art vendors, plenty of food, an art petal mural being created, rock balancing and so much more, plus great views of the Carlsbad area below as you look toward the ocean.

There are a lot of photos, so the show takes a few minutes - just warning you!

Thesa - Thank you. Yep, it's a pretty neat event, and a terrific benefit for the arts programs in teh Carlsbad schools.

Missy - thanks. I should probably cut it down a bit. It was so hard to decide and I excluded a bunch of pics as it was.

Hi Jeff - It was good seeing you and Kaye yesterday.  What a wonderful event.  The artists were certainly to be commended not only for their artistic abilities but also their tenacity.  The light drizzles that surprised us over the weekend made for a lot of extra work for the artists.  Even so they were in great spirits.  It was a wonderful event.  What a great community you live and work in!

Marlene - I was pretty impressed. I can't imagine sitting on the ground like that for hours and hours, let alone having the talent to actually create something that looks like what it is supposed to. I'm just sorry we did not have more time to spend there. But one can't ignore the business calls. :)

See you in Temecula on the 5th!

I saw something about sidewalk art and it looked like you could walk down stairs and stuff. Anyway, I love art and creative stuff...the sand sculptures are wonderful and wish I had been there.

Thanks, Sally. It was pretty impressive, and far more than I could even dream of doing. I enjoy galleries, museums, and art fairs so this was a real treat...and in my own ocmmunity.

Jeff the sand sculptures are amazing.  I do not know if I could devote that much of myself to something that will not last for very long.  Those are amazing people with an amazing talent.  Did I say amazing yet :)

George - it was, indeed, impressive. The one guy these is a renowned sand sculptor and one of the founders of a huge organization that promotes and teadhes sand sculpting. Some of the pictures I have seen are truly incredible. But I agree - they are too transient for me, too.

I have seen chalk art before and it is amazing! Where do they learn this? I could not sit that long for anything - guess that's one of the reasons I am a Realtor.  Sounds like a day of fun!

Boy, I am so sorry I missed this. I need to pay better attention! Would have loved to see these things in person. My San Diego calendar is not extensive enough. Beautifully done! Was working on MeMe post instead of doing something FUN!

Paula - just watching them sitting there in the sun made me tired. And clearly some worked on their pieces for at least the entire day.

Jeff-Wow...that is really something. The chalk art must have been amazing....Watching them do it must have been interesting as well.  I love sand sculptures and all that beach fun.  And you got to see Marlene too?  I say you had a great day!

Midori - it really was interesting to watch the tehcnique. it isn't just drawing but includes combining colors, smudging, and more. And they were large - the one pictures had to be at least 8 feet square! Fascinating.

And of course it is ALWAYS a pleasure to see Marlene. Gregg and Heidi Franklin and Lynda Eisenmann were there too but we did not connect...and I could not stay long.

The Art Splash looks like so much fun. Both the sand sculptures and the chalk art are breathtaking. I also clicked your links for Things to Do and Restaurants. I was surprised to see you "professional picture"! I like your AR pic! Did you create those "slide-shows" on the remax Design Center? They remind me of the web commercials I have created. Very cool.

Thanks, Bridget. It was fun to see.

Actually I used Real Estate Shows to create those shows. I use the professional pic now and then (the one on AR is pretty recent and, um, well, more casual), but really need to get one that is more "updated". :)
