The House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a hearing 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 at the Upper Merion Township Building, 175 W. Valley Forge Road, King of Prussia, on House Bill 33, which would tax Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling.

The public is encouraged to attend, but only members of the committee are permitted to comment and ask questions of those testifying. The public may submit written comments.

Scheduled to testify are:

  • Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center Researcher Michael Wood;
  • Renew Growing Greener Coalition Executive Director Andrew Heath;
  • Pennsylvania League of Women Voters President Olivia Thorne;
  • Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director John Arway;
  • Natural Lands Trust Vice President Oliver Bass; and
  • County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania Government Relations Manager Lisa Schaefer.

State Representative Greg Vitali (166th Leg. District) has introduced the bill so the state can fund important environmental programs, help fill an estimated $4 billion budget shortfall and aid local governments with costs associated with gas drilling.

Pennsylvania is the only major natural gas producing state that does not have a drilling tax or fee. A recent poll shows 63 percent of Pennsylvanians support a drilling tax.
