That's true, Barbara. Our best haunted house was torn down a few years ago. Searcy sleuths will know which one I mean.

I went into 704 E. Market today. It's got a lot of rooms and a lot of character - some of the ceilings need work, but Jenna and I liked it quite a bit. The east side has a room that seemed to have been a porch at one point but was boarded in and given some makeshift shelves. I also noted that very few of the doors seemed capable of actually at all. The front door definitely needs a new lock/knob mechanism, or maybe just needs to be replaced altogether. I would hate to, though, because it's huge and characteristic, almost like a castle door.

There are some nice French doors inside and quite a bit of closet space. I'd live there, to be sure.

There's a house on the other side of town that appears to be the exact mirror opposite of 704 E. Market. I note that the house is called the Mark P. Jones house, and some of you will know that name too. I would wager both houses were designed by the same person...

Barbara, as you drive down E. Market on your way to work....either today or tomorrow....might you take and post a pic. of my friend, Judy Rice's house.....it's the white house next to the Hoffman house....702 E. Market.  Notice a little curved thingee above the front windows.  I always thought that was neat.  This house had an attic you could walk around in.   After Judy's mother died, I was up in that attic:  you've never seen so many hat boxes, all with hats in them.  It was very important in those days for ladies to wear hats, esp. to church....and Mary Rice (Judy's mother) wouldn't be caught at First Baptist Church without her hat!

I'm betting that if Judy's house had been yellow brick, like the ones you have pictured, it might have been on the Register, too.

The haunted house that Luke Jones referes to must be the Armstrong house.  Some time in the past I'm sure we had a blog on her and her house.

@Harold - Maddie Armstrong? That's a story I'm going to have to delve into in the future, but no, that's not the house I was referring to.

thank you for photo'ing Judy's house.  I have had so many good times in that house, too many to even think about.  Now that you caught it so well on film, I can see two little curved thingees.  That was Judy's bedroom on the right (looking at the picture) - that's how she could lie in bed and watch/listen to the Hoffmans, sitting at their kitchen table, next door.

Barbara, I have no clue as to the purpose/function of those little curved thingees.  Just decoration?  You're the expert about things like that....but now that we've started looking and mentioning them, AMAZING that there were more in Searcy.  Love that you went back to the last razed house.  I'm going to start looking for them at houses when I go places.
