Snowstorms will not Stop Oklahoma City Kids from Getting Healthy Food

SnowstormMany area Oklahoma City students depend on school days so they can get a healthy nourishing meal. Nutritious food is very important for focusing and doing well during the school day.

With so many snow days throughout this winter, many kids went without a healthy breakfast or lunch, something they have come to depend on while attending school. Many children even went without their Friday food surplus to help get them through the weekend.

When reflecting on the many snowstorms and the many more children without snacks or food, local food banks made a very important decision. The Food For Kids Program would receive their school food deliveries for children prior to a snow closing day. Schools were also encouraged to allow children to take home extra for their siblings that may not yet be in school.

With the economy affecting so many people, the program helps feed more than 8,000 children throughout the area. It was noted that one out of every five Oklahomans experienced hunger at some point last year.

Keeping people fed is very important in our area, especially in the winter when the weather is inclement and people cannot get out to get needed items.

Much of the food is donated by local citizens who care enough to help their neighbors get through the winter and these poor economic times.

I'm glad the kids are getting fed.  We've been fortunate enough tobe able to feed our own children and I hope we always will (be fortunate). It must be very difficult when you can't provide the basics for your kids so "bravo" to the Food for Kids program.

Jason, that is a staggering figure, one in every 5 have experienced hunger? That just brought it right down to a scary level for me. What a great program for these children, kids should not go hungry... ever. Or cold for that matter. It is so important that towns and cities, states, and even our federal government recognize this as our children will be leading this country someday. And more than that, it is just not right. So.... having said that, thank you for this inspiring post and you are ...

Jason we have a program for kids during schools breaks and summer for kids to get fed....they'd not have anything (or very little) without this kind of help.  They make the meal times educational as well.

We sometimes don't think about all the time that kids are not in school or somewhere that they can get food when there's not much at home. Kudos to these great folks for helping out during those times.
