Recently I ran across a nice little article in Sunset Magazine called Stargazing in Mill Valley. In this case, the stars referred to are not of the celestial type. They are the members of Hollywood’s A-list who will sweep into town next month for Mill Valley’s annual film festival. The article got me to thinking about what a special place Mill Valley really is. After all, it is no small feat to pull off hosting a major film festival.
Located only about 15 minutes north of San Francisco, Mill Valley is an entity unto itself. Sitting at the base of Mount Tamalpais, Mill Valley has the quiet, rural feel of a mountain retreat but, at the same time, manages to be urbane and sophisticated. It is artsy without being quaint and positively exudes a laid-back energy. I know – it sounds paradoxical. Maybe that is part of the charm.
Many consider Mill Valley to be one of the most desirable places to live in northern California. Excellent schools, a moderate climate, stylish Mill Valley homes, and beautiful surroundings make Mill Valley real estate highly sought after. A warm, friendly atmosphere gives Mill Valley a hometown feeling that keeps the locals happy and attracts many visitors and new homebuyers to the area.
There is a little something for everybody in Mill Valley. If you love art and shopping there are lots of little galleries and shops downtown. If you like sports, trails for hiking and riding bikes abound. Just want to kick back and relax? Stop in at the Book Depot Café on the Plaza for some coffee and some people watching. And – if you love movies (or stargazing), well – there’s always the film festival!
Congratulations, Mill Valley, as you celebrate your 30th film festival. You are, indeed, a very special place. May there be many more star-studded extravaganzas, Marin style, in your future!
