What a week it was for publicity, we could all learn a lesson...

Publicity... image by garaughty.com

I don't know if you noticed, but this past week was filled with an avalanche of publicity. In business, we're all looking for ways to get exposure, attention and eyeballs. None of us are in the public eye the way these people are but I think we could all learn some valuable lessons from this varied cast of characters...

The launch of Al Jazeera International, love them or hate them, these guys caught the West's attention when they started hosting controversy by airing Osama Bin Laden's videos a few years back. This is the CNN of the Middle East and on Wednesday November 15th 2006, Al Jazeera launched their service in English.

Borat the movie, create the controversy... this little movie has been at the top of the box office since last weekend and now, it even has Romanian villagers up in arms. Personally I think this is part of the plan to keep the publicity going and has been featured on every major news outlet from CNN, ABC and FOX, right up to the the BBC World News. This was pure genius. The movie was pretty cool too.

Michael Jackson is the controversy... Mikey flops while trying to make a comeback earlier last week.

OJ Simpson launches a new book about how he would have killed his wife "if he did it". This guy will do almost anything to try and get back into the spotlight.

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes get married, who cares but... they sure know how to get attention.

So whether you want to generate controversy, host a controversy or be the controversy, here are a few of my favorite PR spots on the web...

- from PRWebdirect.com, How To Write A Press Release

- from I-Newswire.com Press Release Help

- Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound... articles

- Paul Hartunian's article on Press Releases Made Easy

Enjoy everyone, now go and get noticed...

That's my problem Marti, my life is too boring and no one would write about me to give me press anyway.  Actually, I did have something positive happen this week on an "exposure" stand point.  A new neighborhood website put a link to my Blog without me even asking for it!  So someone has been reading - YEAH!  Thanks for the publicity update.

Great post!  You always get me thinking.  And yes, Aljazeera being the CNN of the Middle East made me laugh.  But then I probably read to much into that one.  :-)

Funny...I have been sending press releases, etc. to the local newspaper for 7 months now regarding my new business of doing real estate video tours.

These people always need a story... and I got mine today!  Spack dab on the front page of the business section with a nice color picture!  You can't buy that kind of promotion.... the emails have already started!

Cynthia... not too many of us lead lives as exciting as OJ or TomKat but keep an eye out for a post I'm working on that will show you how I generated some great publicity from my mailing list last week with a simple thank you letter. It might give you some ideas that you can use locally.

Linda & Monika... as always, thanks for the nice feedback ladies.

Fred... I checked out the link to your newspaper coverage, what an amazing example of good PR. Congratulations, great stuff.

Craig... an update to the scandal I missed will be posted soon. Thx.

So the moral of the story is get the Al Jazeera to video tape Michael Jackson's wedding in a small remote village that is lied to about the situation and where OJ is invited and gives a wedding present of a book on how to kill your wife... if you follow these simple steps, you to can have the publicity that you never dreamed of.

Actually, I just got my first bit of publicity in the local newpaper because of my involvement with a local business networking group.  The paper should be printing the article for this week's print.

Marti, thanks for the great links.  This is going on the top of my To Do List today.

The comments are also really helpful because they give encouragement that it may take time to get noticed but it does work!
