San Jose Fire Station 12
5912 Cahalan Avenue, San Jose, CA 95123 Blossom Valley Homes

I received a call yesterday on my 800 business line. The caller, with panic and urgency in his voice said: "Are you guys open today!?"
Long, long story short - It was a homeowner in distress calling to get help with a letter he received from his lender threatening to foreclose on his home if he did not sign the loan modification agreement within 5 days. Day 5 is today - Sunday.
The Blossom Valley Homeowner has been making payments under a forbearance agreement for 14 months. Per the terms of the forbearance agreement the agreement technically expired in March 2010. In February 2011 the lender sends a modification agreement with a payment significantly higher than their original mortgage payment. The homeowers do not have the income to support the payment under the terms of the modification. What does "Making Home Affordable" mean to you?
I already had an appointment in Blossom Valley. I told the gentleman I would stop by his home to deliver a Third Party Authorization for his signature. We need seller's authorization to speak to a lender on behalf of a seller. This was after I spoke with him for 45 minutes on the phone ... gathering as much information as possible to determine if we had time to do a short sale.

I pass by Station 12 frequently. Yesterday as I drove by I had to circle back around to see if I actually saw what I thought I saw hanging on the pole. Yep, It appears Engine 12 has a new addition to the firefighting family. Probably not the best use of tax-paying dollars ... yet it has my vote. The new fire station looks great and our firefighters certainly deserve to spend their working hours in a nice home.
I digress .... Homeowners deserve to keep their homes. However the bare naked truth about loan modifications ... they are a joke. Loan modifications do not help homeowners stay in the home. In many cases the process forces homes into foreclosure. We do not yet know if Aurora Servicing (investors) will allow this Blossom Valley homeowner time to complete a short sale. We will certainly do everything we can to help. The conditions do not look favorable.
The panic in the callers voice was one of "E M E R G E N C Y"

Kathleen, as a young child, I gave away "Shadow", one of my dalmatians to the local fire department. So, that statue was particularly poignant.
As to your homeowner's story - it is heard all too often. It's disgusting what some of the lenders are doing, making many situations far worse than it needs to be. Best of luck in helping these people out.
Juli, The memory of giving “Shadow” to the local fire department is clearly one that will stay with you forever. I hope we can help these homeowners. They have been thru the mill … including paying a law firm $4,500 for help with the loan mod … attorneys took the money … closed their doors … and ran. Thanks for your comment.
A few tax payer dollars for some levity is probably worth the cost. Evil, evil banks and lawyers. Would the dog were real-- he could give them a good bite!
Brilliant post Kathleen. I'm sure glad we don't have to deal with many foreclosures up here.
Kathleen,
It's a peculiar situation for those who need help on their mortgages, especially when help is not really on the way and the idea of the penalties of strategic default loom over their heads.... g
Kathleen: Just knowing that you are doing everything to assist this buyer will bring him peace of mind!
