Do Not:  Caress the Broom.  Do Not: Fondle the Broom

In Denver, there is a huge, 35 foot, sculpture of a broom and dustpan called the Big Sweep.  The plaque in front of the sculpture states what is appropriate behavior around a giant broom and dustpan.

You may be asking yourself: 1) If you can't fondle the broom, what can you do with it?  2)  What does this broom have to do with real estate blog titles? Huge Broom and Dustpan

Answers:

1) You are allowed to take pictures of the broom.

You are also allowed to blame the broom for the degradation of contemporary morals.

To prove I am not making this up, see:   (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kostaspagiamtzis/4867930790/in/photostream/)

2) Our blogs posts don't get plaques.  However, they do get titles.   The unexpected wording on this plaque made this art exhibit truly memorable.  It generated discussion.  In fact, four days later, I'm still talking about that broom sculpture.   I personally would like some of my blog posts to be read and to generate discussion. So, I think we have to ask ourself:

Is the title to our blog post grabbing the reader's attention?   As I considered the posts on Active Rain that I read yesterday, I noticed that the titles were either really engaging or that the titles clearly described something I wanted to know more about.

For example:

As you can see there are a number of ways that titles can be written to catch a readers attention.

Note:  The sculptors of the Big Sweep are Cossje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg.

The title of this blog sure caught my interest! That's a very cool picture there. Looking at the picture before I read the post I thought it was just a regular broom and dustpan, that's crazy! This post was full of good advice, thank you.

I often think my titles could use a little punch.  Sometimes they're brilliant and others they just plain suck.  I should take a vote on which titles are the catchiest.

You are spot on. The title is the curb appeal and the carrot. I know I can do better at times, its all about taking time to think which we often just don't get enough of.

Sondra -- Catchy titles will definitely boost readership, but I don't know about the SEO. That takes a little work to be successful with both.  Any tips?

The first ad that I wrote that brought many calls for print advertising had a catching title.  Now it still works for the internet.

I believe a catchy blog title is more likely to attract attention initially, but it is the effective use of keyword phrases in the content that continue to drive traffic to the blog in the long run.  Both elements of blog writing are important!

So then, just curious, do you title first then write, or write then title?

Or title first, write then change the title?

I found your titles so interesting I clicked on a couple of them I hadn't read.  Thanks for that.

As one commentor said, do you do the content first or the headline first ?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

A title is important.  With so many competing posts, you need something to grab attention.

Everyone, thank you very much for you comments.  You all have really made me think today about titles and writing blog posts.  As result, I've got two more posts to write that will explore my thoughts on some of the questions in a little more depth.  And, thank you for the comments on the broom.  I'm really glad to know that I'm not really strange for liking the broom and dustpan.  Your comments on the broom and dustpan have been fun.

As Rodney just said, a title is important with so many competing posts.

Virginia and Don, I had to stop and think about your question.  Most of my posts are driven off of an experience that I've photographed.  The broom and it's plaque talking about fondling in this case.  I may come up with a title towards the beginning.  However, I may change it as my writing progresses.  In the case of this blog, I opted to change the title at the very last moment.

Traci, Paul, your comment is basically the theme of one of my upcoming posts.

Dave and Barbara, your comment is basically the theme of my other planned post.

Corinne and Bryan, it would be great if we could all come up with the perfect titles, or even posts for that matter, all of the time.  But, we are human. :)

One thing about our Active Rain community... we are a talented bunch.  I spend so much time reading posts because of their catchy titles, I fail to post myself.

Sondra:  What an excellent post.  Some really great ideas, and I love the picture.

But... more importantly, how very nice to see you back here on Active Rain.  It has been much too long.  I hope you are well... and that all is ok with you.  I look forward to seeing more of your posts.  I've missed you.  <smile>
