What is the point?---the MAGIC 325

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

We all love them and occasionally, just like little Oblio, we may even have a point or two.

Spring time dew dropsThere are LOTS of ways to make points on activerain, but today let’s just talk about the typical 225 points you can get for simply posting a post that has more than 50 words.  Everyone can do this and if you do it the allowed 10 times per week it would get you 2250 points per week---that’s 117,000 points per year.

Now of course as people start to comment on those posts you can gain a few additional points (four points per comment).

If you start writing stuff that people want to comment on, you can get to the point where you can max out the number of points that you can get for a post---usually around 325 points.  If you do that consistently with all ten of your posts for the week that adds up to 3250 points per week----or 169,000 points per year.

This is better than getting one feature a week (425 points) and all of the rest of your posts only getting 225 points each.  Of course you don't get all the glory of a feature but it is easier to get 2 or 3 325's than it is to get one 425.

The irony is that the more comments you get---the more likely you are to get featured so it is kind of a Catch 22.

It takes 25 comments to get your post up to 325 points.

I will be the first to admit that this is no easy feat.  It takes months of consistently dishing out stuff that people want to comment on----so this approach may not be for everyone.  But as long as you are going to post something---why not put in that little extra effort that will get you at least some comments.  Maybe set a goal of getting 5 comments per post (even that would be an extra 200 points a week)---then move up to 10 comments per post.  Before you know it you too may be able to max out the magic 325----and find yourself featured more often.

They will feed each other---and you will start to get more total points for your efforts---and thus get more featured posts.

The other spin off from this is that Google will take note as well---so it is good for your SEO.

Remember content is king.

So get the points?

Holy-mathematician-Batman! I'm trying to write every day, but who knows if anyone wants to read it? Thanx for the info, but I think I'll have to read it again for it to sink in, I failed math...

You know, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I didn't even know about the '325.' I didn't even know the exact point amount for comments. Thanks for this post, as simple as it is it's simply brilliant! I should pay more attention.

Oh, great picture by the way!

Thanks for the info. I'm a newbie and still working the points as much as possible.  I don't know how to get a featured post ( I have had one) but I do spend time on every post and try to write interesting content.  I think it's more about How many people see your post that helps it become an interesting post.

The funny thing is, even when you have the coveted Featured Post, you can only max out at around 475 points ... so even if you  have 100 comments it's still the same number of points as if you had much less (not that I'm counting, just something I noticed).  In fact - I'm much more interested in SEO than points -- and Goggle LOVES Active Rain posts and indexes them within mere minutes  :-)

All good points Oblio, oops Charles.  I still haven't figured out all the ways we can get points but the has been helpful.  Do you get more points for all these comments too?  or does it max out at 425?

Excellent point (pun intended), Charles! I didn't realize that a post "only" needed 25 comments to be worth 325 points. My posts that seem to receive the most comments are usually the ones about the latest mobile phones or photos of my dogs. :)

This post certainly proved your points ... I heard a quote on the radio yesterday from a writer (didn't catch the name) that "the more I write, the easier it gets". You've certainly got it down cold.

Looks like this one earned the magic 450... isn't that the cap for featured posts?  Personally, I don't think they should cap comment points, but it probably benefits me that they do so I'm not complaining.

Charles,

Congratulations on the featured post. It is often difficult to manage a lot of comments when it comes to time. If you intend to respond, this can take more time than writing another post.

Judi, I agree---and because after 25 comments it is all about the "community" more than the "points"

Jeanne, for sure---love the idea of a "big blog":)

Dave, yes it is

Bob, you can count on content being king

Melissa, thanks---and I will keep smiling :)

Mickey, there are so many ways to participate in the rain and they are all good

Joan, if we make it about the content instead of the points we end up with more points :)

Peg, I am no math whiz myself :)

Joe, thanks

Janet, I provided this information for those that are trying to gain more points---for me it is more about the interaction of the comments as I no longer try to do 10 posts a week.

JA, you are welcome

Don, I don't know :)

Maureen, yes---and why eventually it becomes about the comments more than the points

Bill, yes it maxes out---after a while no matter how many comments you get---you stop getting points---but everyone else gets points for commenting

Leilani, yes the "important" stuff often gets ignored

Colleen and that is true

Fernando--you are certainly climbing the old point ladder

Margaret the cap is usually 425 but sometimes you end up with a few more points---not sure why

Brian, and yes---and why it eventually becomes about the comments more than the points

Don, and when you are down like that it is a good time to blog hard and get stuff in reserve.

GOOD MORNING CHARLES!  I did not know how AR tally-ed up points - thanks for sharing it! It seems like it will take me forever to reach yours and Fernando's points but the point about points is they will add up - dedication, love for blogging and being a part of the great group here on AR is all you need to start!

Ok Charles, you wrote this just for me, didn't you?  I'll go ahead and pretend like you did.  You're right, blogging every day would certainly get more points, but jeez, I've seen everyone's posts about being addicted to AR, falling asleep at the computer, etc... I don't understand how everyone does it.

Thanks for the info on how comments get points.  I never understood it before.
