Here is a few quick tips to reduce your energy bill and get money back where it belongs, in your POCKET!
- Replace heater air filters once a month. Once a month you can clean out/ replace the air filters.
- Set up a programmable thermostat. I live by this one. I have mine set really low during the cool months when no one is home and warmer during the summer. I have it cool off or warm up right before the gang gets home and it stays until midnight or so. At midnight (for winter) it gets a little cooler as your under covers anyway! Then right before we wake it warms up until we leave! I have reduced my electric bill SIGNIFICANTLY! All for $50 at LOWES! DID YOU KNOW: Every degree above 70 increases your cost by 7 percent to 10 percent.
- Reverse the blades on ceiling fans during winter. Summer: Have the blades blow the air downward to help cool your home. Winter: fans blowing upward keeping the naturally rising heat moving inside it. DID YOU KNOW: It only costs a half-cent per hour to operate!
- Switch to energy efficient light bulbs. You can save as much as 25% of your electrical bills with this tip.
- Keep vents open and unblocked. Check if any furniture or decors are blocking your heating vents.
- Fireplace. Close the fireplace damper tightly when you are not using it. A good chimney can draw up to 20 percent of the air out of the house every hour.
- Dish-washing. Wash a full load of dishes. Dishwashers use approximately 15 gallons of hot water. Washing by hand could use as much as 20 gallons.
- Cooking. Turn off the oven about 15-20 minutes before the end of cooking time. The leftover heat in the oven will finish the job, if you don't open the oven door. DID YOU KNOW: Each time you open it, 25 percent of the oven's heat is wasted.
- Microwave More. Microwave ovens draw less than one-half the power of a conventional oven and foods cook in about one-fourth the time, greatly reducing cooking costs.
- Take Showers. Take showers instead of baths because a shower saves 4-5 gallons of water.
