I never heard of a mullet festival. Is it a bunch of guys with bad haircuts? Sorry... I couldn't resist. My strange sense of humor.

Cynthia, You got me on that one as well...I think it's a type of fish but maybe I'm just stuck on your last recipe.  Please share what a MULLET is :)  Oh, and if it's fish you'll have to send it up (please include wonderful recipe).

Hi Carole,
It is a type of fish but I must confess I do not eat mullet--it is a very strong fish.  Many people really like it and the fishing industry in our area depended heavily on their mullet catches in the past.

The preferred method of cooking mullet is charcoal grilled.

Thanks for visiting tonight, sorry I don't have a recipe for you.  :0)

Rich,
Guess I am full of surprises today, so many people are not familiar with mullet fish.  They are a little strong for my taste but there's a lot of history involved, thus the festival.  Thanks for coming by and commenting.

Hi Dick,
Guess we'll have to go to Texas for the steak festival.  LOL.  Thanks.

Cynthia, I had to ask, I've never heard of it.  And thank you but if it's that strong I probably wouldn't like it, either.  Have a great day.

Cynthia - I grew up near the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge in Church Freek, Maryland, and I think I have caught mullet before.  I have never eaten one though.  I always heard that they have so many bones that they are very difficult to eat.  The festival sounds nice.  Have fun!

Hi Sonja,
Maybe we bump into each other there.  Thanks for the visit and comments.

Hello Carole,
I'm glad you asked  and happy I could enlighten you.  Take care--and thank you.

Hi Mickey,
I have never eaten one either so I cannot attest to that but I think you might be correct.  As I told Carole , there is a lot of history with the fishing industry and mullet.  As I understand it, years ago mullet was salted and preserved and was an important staple in the diet of the people in the coastal areas.

Yup,a mullet is a fish.most mullets caught here(swansboro)I believe go overseas, especially the row. Since the "Red Tide" came through here in the mid 80's,the local fishing industry has struggled to get back on its feet. Now the area depends heavily on tourism,so get your butts to the festival, buy some local art,try some fish, and have a good time.

Hey Cynthia, I've eaten fried mullet that was really pretty good and not that strong. They have to be very fresh...never frozen. The real Southport old timers would catch them in gill nets by the boat load this time of year, wrap them in foil with butter, lemon, and onions, and cook them over coals built on a fire right out on the beach. I can imagine anything being good cooked like that! Anything they didn't eat right then, they would either smoke or pickle in a salt brine. There's not too many of those guys left.....and no replacements in sight.

Hi Vicki,
I've heard that the fishermen here did that also, I think the smoked and pickled fish were to take them through the winter months?  A lost breed of men for sure.  Thanks for your comments.
