Children's pool and harbor seals at La Jolla Cove

As much as I love the San Diego Zoo, it's always amazing to see wildlife in the wild, doing what wildlife do, and right here in La Jolla, at the Children's pool at La Jolla Cove, is one of the nation's few seal rookeries, and the only one in San Diego:

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoThis area was conveyed to the City of San Diego by Ellen Browning Scripps way back in 1931, a gift that was officially accepted by an act of the California legislature. It was supposed to be kept in perpetuity as a children's pool, basically for the rich people of La Jolla. However, in the early 1990s, the harbor seals moved in and claimed it, if not as their own, well, at least partially theirs.

After over a decade of lawsuits concerning the Children's Pool and the harbor seals, state legislation was passed last year to put control of the area in the hands of the City of San Diego, notwithstanding the gift sanctions by Mrs. Scripps.http://www.missionvalleycondos.info

Harbor seals are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Unfortunately, the City has not decided what to do about the harbor seal rookery, so at the present time, there is simply a rope up from mid-December to late February, pupping season, to prevent people from harassing the seals, which they tend to do for some strange reason.

If you have a chance, though, stop by to see the harbor seals. It's not very often where you get to watch unusual wildlife in the wild, http://www.missionvalleycondos.infofrolicking and enjoying the sun, in the midst of a major metropolitan area.

The harbor seals have become a great tourist attraction for San Diego County, certainly much more so than watching some rich children play in the surf, espescially when those children can either play in their own backyard pools or go anywhere else along San Diego's miles and miles of beaches.

How wonderful to have this type of wildlife and seals are so playful and fun to watch.  I am glad there is protection for these animals and measures taken to keep them safe.  Love the photos!!

Seals seem to have a pretty good thing going. Laying around in the sun and enjoying themselves. They fit into the San Diego Area nicely.

Oh I'd love to see all those seals.  Last summer I went to the Biodome in Montreal and saw the penguins.  That was very cool.

Jim - the seals add to the human drama of the environment ... and when watched in the "wild" you get an entirely different sense of them as part of creation!  Thanks for sharing ...
