The Shower Door Soap Scum Saga.....

By
Home Stager with Stage Tucson! Professional Home Staging

So then.....today I was going to post a helpful little blog with some pointers that everyone can give their Seller's.  Or at least that's how it started out.   For Example:

Squeaky doors: try using petroleum jelly on the hinges for squeaky doors....   it doesn't drip.

If your house is listed and you MUST cook cabbage or fish (oh dear!) - Boil one cup of water in a pan on the stove with 2 tbsp vinegar to help alleviate the odor.

To freshen sink drains, put 1/2 cup baking soda down drain, followed by 1 or 2 cups vinegar. Let sit 5 or 10 minutes and flush with water.

you get the picture....    and so THEN I thought I would post a wonderful miracle cure for those awful Soap Scum Filmy Grimy Shower doors that we see ohhhhhh so often. I was positive that I could find an answer at the "cyberspace encyclopedia"  and so search I did.  But not only did I want to search, but I wanted to try all my tips to make sure that in fact they work.  so........  All of the above were just fine and dandy and my sink smells fresh as can be. But as for the Shower Doors.............grrrrr     I didn't even realize that my Shower doors were very "soap scummy"

Things I tried this morning......   other than the obvious glass cleaner/tile cleaner stuff.

Dryer Sheets (moistened).....   well, yes, this didn't work too bad. I think that if your shower door is only moderately dirty, this would be effective.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.....   yup.......this was even more effective than the dryer sheet - for a minute there, I thought my glass shower was looking pretty good. (In most cases, these really ARE magic!) --but wait....upon closer inspection, I could see little teeny weeny water marks...... that in the nearly two years that we've lived in our house, I had NEVER even noticed.

So then I tried furniture polish on my doors, --apparently it's the "oil" in the polish that is the "miracle cure" -- there were even many posts about using baby oil, or vegetable oil.  Again.....looked pretty clean at first, but once the "powers that be" had settled ---  I could STILL see the teeny tiny faint little water marks on the lower half of the shower door. --  Keep in mind that now my shower door is cleaner than it's EVER been since moving in and now the "barely visible to the human eye" water marks are like GLARING MONSTER SOAP SCUM MARKS to me and so back to cyberspace I go....researching, reading reviews, gathering.....  and from what I can see....the answer to all Soap Scum Shower Door problems is "CLR" which is available at many local stores. So of course..... I'm going to buy some........first thing tomorrow!!!  and then........"Watch out" --

Now of course any magical suggestions would be appreciated, because, I'm sure we would ALL love to know how to get our Soap Scum banished!  ....and I'm CERTAIN some of you know the answer!  but in the meantime  -- I will keep trying...........I will post an update on the Soap Scum and let everyone know how the CLR works.

I hope I can sleep tonight knowing my Shower Door is so filthy!

I had heard that some baby oil and a razor blade works really well on  soap scum on shower doors.

As for cat pee or dog Urine I try to get as much up as possible and then put baking soda on it and let it sit for at least 25 hours.  Then vacuum it up.

Haley's Hints has some wonderful ideas for all this kinds of stuff and I refer to it quite often.

Since the property is vacant, a fresh pot of coffee would be a little strange!

For the soap scum try Comet spray cleaner. For the cat odor try Nature's Miracle. It makes it smell worse for about a week whilt it eats the odor causing enzymes, but after that you can put your nose right on the carpet & not smell it. GOOD LUCK to both of you!

For cat pee - use Pure Ayre - you have to get it to the source and they have a great tool kit for this.  It has an extra large syringe with needle and a blacklight in the kit - so you can see exactly where on the carpet the odor is - and then you can inject the carpet pad with the Pure Ayre.  It is plant based enzymes, all natural, safe around pets and people.  Try it . .. www.PureAyre.com

As for shower scum, I have heard white vinegar works - not sure if that's true or not - we are squeegee users - faithfully using the squeegee every time we shower so we avoid water spots.

Get some sleep, Nancy!!  I am sure your door will be fine for another day while you research the perfect cure for spots!

Nancy,

Although some people find this product controversial, I found it works GREAT for removing soap scum.

WD-40.

I spray it on the glass doors, use a scouring pad and scrub, I use wet paper towels to remove excess and throw the scouring pad and paper towels away when done. That way it is not running down the drain. It comes out beautiful.

Also, try it on your stove-top..It will be shinier than ever

Good luck

Nancy, soap scum on shower doors, white vinegar full strength and if needed mix in some baking soda.  Stay away from WD-40 its toxic.  If you want to shine appliances or cabinets, stainless steel, etc use olive oil.  And yes Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution works great for cat pee.  Make sure when  you use it you pour it on and saturate the spot and let it take its time drying.  The longer its wet the better as it gives the enzymes time to eat the odor.  This should be done after carpet cleaning so the product is not removed.

Krud Kutter (in the cleaning supply section at Home Depot, also seen in hardware stores, and I think I once saw it in the paint dept. at Walmart)  is good for soap scum, dried paint, all sorts of things.  I found a small sample size at Office Max recently.

Did you know that vinegar will deter cats from returning and re- wetting?  We had a kitten decide a closet was its place, but a light spray of vinegar and a bowl set on the spot filled with vinegar did the trick. I keep a spray bottle with vinegar & water handy when I adopt a new cat.  Cat on counter - cat off counter .  Doesn't take long and they get the message.

So many tips,,, so little time.  I hear that CLR is great, too. When the scum is gone, then you can use 'Shower to Shower. It's to prevent sum build up.

hello and i know all too well the horrible time of getting out pet odors as i encounter this problem many times with my cleaning and staging business. we have found that ODO-BAN found only at Sam's club is the solution. it is wonderful to remove mildew smells and so very many other odors. i buy it by the gallons and it has become a necessity with our company. when the odors are in the carpets or furniture we use it in the steam cleaner to clean them. we have also used it in the god-awful smells left behind in an uncleaned refrierator or freezer and it works great. let me know if it helps.

I wasn't an AR member yet when this post originally came out, but I'm glad I've seen it now.  Great tips and I just tried the Magic Eraser (or similiar product) and it worked so well.  I am thrilled that I now know what to tell clients when they need to clean their shower doors and don't know what to use.  I have some great tips now.

Nancy,

Yep! CLR is great for soap scum and hard water build up, and as Jennie mentioned white vinegar is probably the next best thing especially if you want a greener approach to cleaning your shower doors!  Good luck and happy cleaning!

I tried CLR for the 1st time on my shower doors and had a client use it this past week with great results.  I use lemon oil to prevent build up.

I do not know what works anymore I keep trying new products every week, but those nasty little water marks do not go away, replacing shower doors and starting all over would be an answer!!! I will try krud kutter now.
