At a recent Lower Columbia Initiatives meeting, Teck, Trail Operations reported that in 2010 they had 173 new hires. This figure is expected to be repeated in 2011 and, they are hoping, beyond that date. There are 45 new apprentices on board, of varying trades. They expect 200 or more employees will be retiring this year, so that may just open the gates for a few more new hires!
The 4th furnace that Teck is hoping to put in is going to Public Hearing, and at this point they are not expecting any serious opposition, as they have done the ground work.
Teck is so optimistic about the Trail and surrounding West Kootenay area, that they are granting $15,000.00 to the Trail Community Futures to bolster local small business start-ups.
This only bodes well for the entire area, and we are excited about the future. We did not suffer as badly as a lot of British Columbia towns, there was some slow down, but things are definately looking up from here!
