This literally started out this morning as an email to my sister Laura, then I thought why not include my Active Rain friends and see what's working for them too?
It's almost Spring (she says optimistically) and a young girl's heart turns to thoughts of weight loss/fitness. Or an old girl's conscience, as the case may be. And a Realtor's thoughts turn to ramping up for Spring Market - which means having the energy to keep up with a grueling schedule.
I've got friends doing an expensive "special foil-wrapped packets of high protein pretend food" diet that they swear by, but fake food has never made sense to me. You may lose weight, but it is most definitely NOT the fake food that does it; it's the other stuff they make you do also, like limit portions and avoid certain other (junk) foods, and possibly (gasp!) exercise. This belief will make me very unpopular with the people who sell this stuff, and granted their way is easier and involves less mess and chopping, but I've got to go the real food route.
So, once again, I'm investigating to see what the nutritional guru's are thinking these days. Here's one I never saw, before, the "Paleo Diet". Some of what it says make sense like eating a lot less (and eventually no) refined foods and a lot more veggies, and some flies in the face of current wisdom, like use butter to cook with instead of olive oil. And drink cream (ugh). Which reminds me unpleasantly of my days with Dr. Atkin's diet. WARNING: if you think this is going to be easy just know that the formal name of this plan is "The revolutionary 12 step paleo diet program", and is based on the concept of "Paleo Nutrition" by Kurt G. Harris MD.
Or the Fat Flush Diet Detox Diet Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman (which my sister has used successfully in the past, and liked how much energy she had). I like the idea that it involves real food, and that it helps your body rid itself of the many toxins I'm convinced are in our environment, water and food supply.
Good old standby Weight Watchers. I'm not a big joiner so no meetings for me thank you but I've used the online version successfully in the past. What I like is it makes it much easier to track what and HOW MUCH you are REALLY eating, you can eat anything you want, and you can track the affect exercise has on your results. Jennifer Hudson's sure looking good!
I'm thinking maybe the Weight Watcher's tracking tools, plus maybe some of the nutritional approaches of one of these other plans.
What are YOU doing that's working for you?
