Not Really about Real Estate - or maybe it is...What are you doing to be energetic & healthy?

This literally started out this morning as an email to my sister Laura, then I thought why not include my Active Rain friends and see what's working for them too?

It's almost Spring (she says optimistically) and a young girl's heart turns to thoughts of weight loss/fitness. Or an old girl's conscience, as the case may be. And a Realtor's thoughts turn to ramping up for Spring Market - which means having the energy to keep up with a grueling schedule.

I've got friends doing an expensive "special foil-wrapped packets of high protein pretend food" diet that they swear by, but fake food has never made sense to me. You may lose weight, but it is most definitely NOT the fake food that does it; it's the other stuff they make you do also, like limit portions and avoid certain other (junk) foods, and possibly (gasp!) exercise. This belief will make me very unpopular with the people who sell this stuff, and granted their way is easier and involves less mess and chopping, but I've got to go the real food route.

So, once again, I'm investigating to see what  the nutritional guru's are thinking these days. Here's one I never saw, before, the "Paleo Diet". Some of what it says make sense like eating a lot less (and eventually no) refined foods and a lot more veggies,  and some flies in the face of current wisdom, like use butter to cook with instead of olive oil. And drink cream (ugh). Which reminds me unpleasantly of my days with Dr. Atkin's diet. WARNING: if you think this is going to be easy just know that the formal name of this plan is "The revolutionary 12 step paleo diet program", and is based on the concept of "Paleo Nutrition" by Kurt G. Harris MD.

Or the Fat Flush Diet Detox Diet Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman (which my sister has used successfully in the past, and liked how much energy she had). I like the idea that it involves real food, and that it helps your body rid itself of the many toxins I'm convinced are in our environment, water and food supply.

Good old standby Weight Watchers. I'm not a big joiner so no meetings for me thank you but I've used the online version successfully in the past. What I like is it makes it much easier to track what and HOW MUCH you are REALLY eating, you can eat anything you want, and you can track the affect exercise has on your results. Jennifer Hudson's sure looking good!

I'm thinking maybe the Weight Watcher's tracking tools, plus maybe some of the nutritional approaches of one of these other plans.

What are YOU doing that's working for you?

In a nutshell, "exercise". The moment I start exercising, I shed the pounds, period. You won't even believe... I can eat basically whatever I want, as long as I exercise. I have had my sluggish days and when I was pregnant I felt like I could sleep for days..... But at the end of the day, when you eat right too, it gives you energy. Energy makes you exercise, but when you just exercise> you gain the energy as well... I have started noticing my portion intake is less. I just get full faster now. By no means am I tiny, either. Never have been and I am ok with that. Importantly, I am comfortable in my own skin and that too at the end of the day is KEY!  And yes, I believe WW works, my aunt used it and my cousin and swear by it!

Hi Lauren, thanks. It's really hard to get back into exercising. As Realtors, we get WAY to much seat time (like right now, as I write this). It seems like a chicken-or-the egg argument; you need energy to exercise to get energy! But I know you're right. What's your favorite way to exercise? I've started walking again, but need to add something else.

Hi Beth, I started working out at a franchise called Precision Fitness a few months ago.  Kind of a personal-training-for-less operation that also keeps you accountable for your food.  I've lost about 10% body fat and gained some muscle.  What I've gotten out of the experience is that the most important thing BY FAR is accountability (for food and exercise).  Without it, I flounder.

Good advice Rosario. I checked and looks like Precision Fitness is not in my area, and I guess that's one reason to live in Southern California ;^0

I did find that Snap Fitness has something similar in my area: http://www.snapfitness.com/sedonawest/home/redirectroute/corporate/redirectname/club-locator/

I guess they have locations all over the country. Anybody used Snap Fitness?

I have a wonderful food plan (I refuse to use the D word) which is the most sensible, the most filling, the greatest thing I have ever done. When I stick to it I lose weight like crazy, eat until I am full, and feel the best I have ever felt. I even made changes to it because certain things just wouldn't work for me, for instance, I was supposed to have brown rice, my family wouldn't hear of that so I used those flavored Carolina Rice mixes.

I have to search through a few computers for the original diet, I can't promise I can find it, but if you email me I will send it to you if I find it. No nonsense, no fuss, no crazy foods, just great stuff. Let me just give you an example of a day of food for me when I am on the diet. (Also note, I was supposed to weigh the meat portions, I didn't, I was supposed to eat white meat chicken baked, YUCK, I used olive oil in a frying pan, chicken thighs, and just didn't eat the skin)

Breakfast: Cereal and fruit, like... grape nuts or special K

Lunch, meat, rice, veggie, salad, fruit

Dinner, meat, rice veggie salad

Before bedtime snack, cereal and fruit again

No bread, no pasta, and there is a list of other yes and no foods.

It was some heart healty diet from a hospital, and is years old, but boy oh boy is it great. Now if I could just find the motivation to cook ... and just do it... ghesh.. now I feel real bad, LOL.

Best of luck!

Thanks Andrea, I would like it, will email you my address. It looks like a lot of food - wonder if I can even eat that much! And yes, I like 'food plan', sounds much more user-friendly.

Beth--How timely!  I need to get going on something right away. I have always had to be conscious of my weight, but never felt I was losing the battle until I hit 50 and all that comes with it.  I can't imagine there is a 'food plan' I have not used---except Atkins---not a big meat eater.  Was getting excited about Andrea's plan up above, but give up carbs?  No bread or pasta?  Impossible!  Probably back to WW for me too---I think I need the accountability of the meetings though I hate taking the time to do it.  WW just makes sense---eat what you want, but pay the price.  If you have that piece of chocolate cake, you get less food another time.  Veggies helps stretch out what you can eat and in the end that is healthier for us anyway.  There just is no truly easy way.  Just gotta do it!

This post has been over a year ago, what did you end up doing as far as your nutrition? I've been doing paleo/primal for a little over a month and it's awesome! I thought giving up pasta and bread would be difficult, but I don't miss it at all. It makes sense, because it's toxic to our bodies anyway. Hope you're doing well!
