As a follow-up to my January 7 post, Help Save the Azaleas at the U.S. National Arboretum in DC,  I'm happy to report that an anonymous Million Dollars donation will fund an endowment to save the plants, and a major fundraising drive will begin now that there's time to tap other funding sources

Apparently there had been an effort to relocate the plants to the U.S. Naval Academy grounds, but negotiations on that have been suspeneded since the donation and endowment were announced on February 14.

The full announcement, made on the Washington Gardener blog, can be read at USNA Azalea and Boxwood Collections Get Reprieve

Dear Margaret -

Great news!  Thank you to the Azelea and Boxwood benefactor. It is amazing what people will volunteer to do that benefits others!

Robert Woodruff* (1889-1985) who displayed foresight and enhanced the cultural and medical world for many people with his "anonymous" donations always said, "There's no limit to what a  man can accomplish if he doesn't care who gets the credit."

In fact, here in Atlanta, where everyone still benefits from his actions, Mr. Woodruff was known affectionately as "Mr. Anonymous"!

Have a happy day -
Lynn

*not to mention his success in making Coca-Cola a world-wide name ...

Always good news to see things protected and saved!

You'll have to give me a list of these neat things to do whenever I make it North! That and a long, long lunch with you!

Wow...One Million Dollars to save plants.  The private sector is so generous that government should simply get out of the social program business, lower taxes and let the private sector handle it.  We are a generous society and can do a much better job with government interference.

Lynn - The donation was made in memory of a Washington Power couple who had loved the Arboretum.

Tom - There is soooooo much to do here.  You'd need several days in DC, several more in Annapolis, and then there's Baltimore.

Simon - Here, here!  That is sooooo true.

Cynthia - That's a lot of money, but it's going to take a bunch more to preserve these collections for another 40 years.

Christopher - 'Looking forward to seeing more of you around here.

That's great news! I remember when you first posted this and the thought of losing those plants was just awful.  I'm so glad the funding is coming in to save them.

Debe - This is an old collection that is truly stunning when in bloom.  I haven't been there since I began on Activerain, but it looks like it's gotta be on my agenda now as a finale to this series.  I'm glad to see the interest in this story because this collection belongs to all of you, as an American taxpayer, since the U.S. National Arboretum is a one of the national monuments here in D.C.

Jeff - Wouldn't it be nice to have some clients with that much discretionary money available?  I never experienced that.

Ruthmarie - It was a shame to imagine this amazing collection removed... I couldn't understand why they wouldn't have left it, but just stopped maintaining it until some funds could be raised.  I guess moving the location to another site would have been a reasonable alternative, but I hadn't read anything about that.
