From My Email In-Box: How to Inject Color - and Energy - without Re-Painting Your Home

What do you do when it's just not possible or practical to re-paint, and your surroundings are making you feel down, dull and miserable? Can anything make up for the wide expanse of wall colors that you don't like?

Email about Color

Transition Stage - When Life Brings Change Home has the following suggestions for the "bland" among us.

Kick up the Energy with Color Here - and Here - and Here

Bring that energy right in with your favorite colors on other surfaces. Of course, there are the usual places to pop some color:

  • Pillows - on your sofa and chairs, in big pillows on the floor as extra seating
  • Throws - over the arm or back of the bigger seating pieces
  • Window Treatments - where you can add color, texture, shine, and even pattern

But there are also some other types of things you may not have thought of:

  • Rugs - which can be added to rooms with any kind of flooring, including wall-to-wall carpet. They can add color and interest, as well as give a more cohesive feeling to your seating arrangement by "anchoring" the legs of the chairs and sofa.
  • Small Ottomans - in colors, ethnic print fabrics, or interesting textures
  • Slip Covers - for your dining room chairs as well as to change up chairs in the living room that blend into the wall color a bit too much
  • Floor Screens - to give a big expanse of color, pattern or texture (or a mixture of any of these) against a big, bland wall. Here is a sample selection easily available either online or at local stores:

          - Nature's Wonders Floor Screen from Home Decorators  (71"H x 48"W),  $199

Nature's Wonders Floor Screen

          - Avery Screen from Target  ( 71"H x 47"W), $293

Avery Floor Screen

Note that you can add floor screens in many different types of places in your home (although I'm not suggesting you have more than one in a room): behind a sofa to add some color to that wall, in a corner to set off a chair and small table, as room dividers, and so on. The only limitation is your imagination.

To kick up the color energy, have fun and play with several ideas. Soon the bland will be forgotten - just a backdrop to the real story of your life. Enjoy!

And remember, if you'd like some help adding color to your life, Transition Stage is here to bring some new suggestions and thinking your way!

Judy, these are great suggestions and visuals on how any of us can liven up our homes.  This is probably the best way to decorate anyway and allows more versatility in making a change down the road.

Hi Barbara - Thanks! You're right that using any of these means it's easy enough to change your palette whenever you like.

Hi Valerie - I know what you mean. Screens worked better in my previous home; not so much here, though. Thanks - I'm glad you liked my post!

Hi Frank & Karen - Thanks very much! Yes, greige is an unfortunate (to me) combination of grey and beige which I find particularly dull and lifeless.

Judy- these are great ideas!!!  There are so many people not in a position to paint their rooms and yet want to have something fresh or with color.  The ideas you suggested are affordable and the nice thing is they can be easily changed as the owners transition elsewhere.
