Gun Toting College Students?

Oh Lord!  If Texans don't already have a reputation for gun toting, horseback riding, cowboy hats etc....our  San Antonio, Republican Senator, Jeff Wentworth has sponsored a bill that would allow professors and students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

According to Wenthworth, "This is about self-defense".  "It's about protecting lives of students who are totally vulnerable and defenseless and able to be picked off by a deranged shooter, as was the case in Virginia." Virginia Tech is the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.  The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho shot 32 people to death and wounded two others in this rage.  University of Texas, Austin, also had a historical bad day in 1966 where Charles Whitman killed 16 people and wounded 31 others.

Don't get me wrong.  My personal belief follows the consititution that says we have a right to bear arms, but I'm just not sure about young college students walking around with 'heat'.

If the bill is passed, people would be able to carry weapons on campus after being licensed and fully trained. Currently, a person must be 21, attend a 10-hour course and pass an exam. The exam includes shooting a handgun at a shooting range with a handgun and the person must pass this test. Criminal background checks and a fee would be part of what is required before the person will be licensed.

Sponsers of the bill believe that handguns are becoming a necessity for defending yourself in our society. Proponents believe that more handguns on campus will result in more violence.  What do you think?

The Tragedy at Virginia Tech is just one of countless examples why Citizens, including College Students, should [have the right to] carry a Gun.

Diana,  I have to agree with Fred. The bad guys don't care about the laws - they will carry guns no matter what.  I would prefer to have some citizens around who have gone through background checks and training.

I think society is unsafe - I don't think any woman anyone should ever show a home without some form of protection and a concealed weapon is perfect.

Friend's son goes to VaTech * if he had had a GUN when the shooter was on campus, 20+ kids would NOT be dead - EVERYONE should have a GUN and KNOW how to USE it!

Is not about carrying a gun in school but about not having "gun free zones" that lets the psycho know that he/she will be able to accomplish maximum damage with minimum resistance from law abiding citizens. Is not about students, it's about the regular CHL holder that is NOT allowed to bring their handgun into any school property. I happen to work until very late and when I leave work, by myself, is dark and scary. CHL holders are NOT children, they are not irresponsible and they have spent plenty of time and money to acquire knowledge of the law to be able to carry plus they need to be approved by both the state and the FBI before they get their license.
Besides just because there's a law that restricts guns in a campus it doesn't mean that there are no students that keep guns on them or their dorm. And just because this is allowed it doesn't mean that everyone over 21 will be packing heat the next day.

Thanks for your feedback...I believe with the coooks that are running around society these days, we'd better be protecting ourselves!

Diana,

This surely is a tough topic to be discussing here.  The first thing that came to my mind was the shooting of Congresswoman Gifford. It's really not safe anywhere anymore and that makes me sad.

Yikes.  This is scary.  Living in Colorado and having the constant memory of the Columbine shootings, this is a recipe for disaster!!!

But in Colorado at Columbine the guns were illegaly carried by the students that commited the crime. A gun free zone doesn't work when criminals ignore the laws and rules already in place. More gun laws just restrict the rights of Law Abiding Citizens to protect themselves should they chose to and do nothing to prevent criminals from breaking the laws (that's why they are called criminals).

Once again: Gun Free Zones are just a place where criminals know that they are relatively safe from someone stoping them while they are breaking the law.

And as I stated before Concealed Handgun Licence (CHL) holders are responsible adults that follow the laws and they are NOT the problem. And allowing guns on campus doesn't mean that the next day every 21 or older student will be carrying. It only means that you can choose to carry or not in that area as you can choose to carry or not in any other place where you can lawfully carry a gun if you are licensed to do so (only place you are not allowed to carry are bars or establishments that serve a 51% alcohol profit in their business or if you are drinking any amount of alcohol).

Diana, with everyone having guns, and some not mature enough to tote them, sounds like more trouble.   We shall have to wait and see what legislation has to say.
