You have 300 friends so now what?

How do you extend the reach of your social networking AND monetize your efforts at the same time?

New from Facebook - Sponsored Stories

Before we go over the how, let's look at the what.

When you log into Facebook on the right you see ads, connections, etc. and now you will see sponsored stories.  They look like an ad but with a twist.

John Smith used you as his realtor 3 years ago and now follows you on Facebook.

Mary Smith is John's sister-in-law so she and John are Facebook friends.

You would love it if Mary Smith used you as her realtor.  But how?

If you use Sponsored Stories, your ad will show up on Mary's page with the tag, "John Smith Likes This".  Call it a warm introduction instead of a cold call.

How do you do it?

When you create an ad, you can now target that ad to Friends of your Friends.  So you can run an ad that goes to people you have never met or connected with and a separate one for people who already follow you.  There is nothing better than a warm introduction.

In theory, this should result in higher click throughs and conversions than a blind ad.  I personally just discovered this today and it has been in beta for a few weeks so there is little data available yet to back up my assumption, but look for more to follow.

Wow it is amazing how you can use facebook to target your ads. We will have to take advantage of the sponsored stories as well!
