The crisp September days of sunshine and warmth with cool nights following, have caused the leaves to begin to change. All around us are the brilliant colours of autumn in Southern Ontario~ Oranges, Reds, Pinks, Bugundys, Yellows and a myriad of shades inbetween. Fall is in the air and with it comes the annual Brighton Applefest !

This coming weekend the Brighton Applefest celebrates it's 33rd year.
When I was a child , growing up in Trenton Ontario, my town was surrounded by orchards.
Many summer days were spent riding bareback through the apple orchards and every harvest season farm workers flew in from the Caribbean to work in the harvesting.

My Father was the plant manager of a large manufacturing facility whose specialty was juices and apple juice was their main product. My summer holidays when I was in high school and saving to go to university, were spent working in his plant on the lines bottling and canning the pungeant fresh juice. Truckload after truckload of apples would arrive, all to be pressed and made into the finest juice available.

Most of those orchards are gone now as room was made way for housing developments and stores like Walmart.

The traditions began back then still survive, though, and there are still many apple farms around the Brighton/Trenton area and in Prince Edward County. My Mother always picked a bushel of apples in the fall and we would be treated with homemade apple crisp and pies for months as winter settled in. Fall and apples just naturally go together. Like the old saying goes ' Apple pie without cheese, is like a kiss without a squeeze....'.

In Brighton the festivities will run all weekend long beginning on Thursday and ending Sunday afternoon.

All weekend long there will be a midway behind the arena (beginning Thursday which is loonie and toonie night) .

Memory Junction will be open from 10 am to 4 pm daily and on Sunday the Junction will feature music by Country Strummers and the Dixie Band during the day. At 7:45pm there will be a Ghost Walk through Brighton.

At Proctor House Museum, the Proctor Simpson Barn will be featuring 'Peggy and Grace' Live Theatre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm and on Sunday at 2 pm.

A juried art show will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday at E.N.S.S. Gala night is Friday night from 7-9 (with refreshments being served)~tickets are $10 at the door. Admission is free on Saturday and Sunday when the show will be open beginning at 10 am.

Hi Jo-Anne! Oh.....apples......applie pie. Applesauce.....apple cobbler. Oops. Sorry. I am making myself hungry. I need to go pick some more apples and make my homemade apple pie. :) Hope you're well.

I'm there when you bake an apple pie!  I love apple pies. My mom used to bake...many a year ago. I would pour canned apples in a pie crust (I'd do something wrong and it would come out bad)

Jo, Wow, I have to say when you have a faiir up there, you go all out!!  It's festival time around here as well but they don't incorporate so many things, usually vendors and food.  I still love them and go to as many as I can.  Thanks for sharing all of this and eat some fresh apple pie for me!

Jo-Anne you're making me hungry!  What a fun event - I bet the turnout is huge!

Thank you Cynthia

It's one of the largest events of the year in this region and draws visitors from far and wide. There certainly is something for everyone at this festival and the spirit of the community shines through and spreads to all who attend.

Joanne,  Thanks so much !
I've learned a lot about writing localism articles from reading your blogs. They're amazing !  I really enjoy writing about my region...most likely because I have such a passion for this area where I grew up and have lived most of my adult years.

Pamela, Thanks for stopping by !
Isn't it amazing how versatile apples are ? I've read that apples are the second most valuable fruit produced in Canada and the USA next to oranges.

I need to get out and pick some apples yet this year.....Gala are my favourite.

Jo-looks like a wonderful event.  The apples, can you make those taste and sniff?  In this cyber world there's got to be a way. LOL.

Sally,  I'd love to bake pies with you !
What could you possibly do wrong pouring a can of apple filling into a crust? hmm...
I once made a loaf of bread ( I was about 12 or 13) and it turned out to be a compact, heavy rectangle. It smelled great though and I was so proud of it...I couldn't wait til dinner to share it with my family. My little brother came home from baseball and ate the WHOLE thing when I wasn't in the kitchen.  I was so upset and even moreso when all he would do was grin....I guess it must have tasted good.   ((-:

Good morning Carole

Thanks for visiting this post .  ((-:

Yes, there is tons of community spirit and participation throughout the whole Quinte region. Festivals of all kinds have a lot of sponsors and volunteers step forward and it helps the whole area with tourism and bringing people together.

My favourite apple recipe is apple crisp....I make it every Thanksgiving.
Perhaps one day you'll be able to visit here during apple harvest season.

Hi Kris !
Yes, the Applefest does get a huge turnout numbering in the many thousands from far and wide. Many Americans come up to attend  this event yearly as well as people from other provinces.
It seems to be growing bigger and bigger every year.

Jo-Anne,

Sounds like a great weekend of fun!  Never heard of cheese on apple pie - I wonder if that is a Canadian tradition?

Hi Rita,

It might be, come to think of it. There were many dairy farms in Ontario and Quebec in pioneer days and apples and cheese were often served together so perhaps they became a tradition.  Sort of like poutine in Quebec...

Laurie,  My Mom and I are going apple picking this coming Sunday, so I'll be thinking of you while I pick them and if I could, would send you an apple pie in the mail (I don't think it would make it through customs though....the customs folks would likely take a few too many bites!! ).   (((-:

Hi Jo-Anne,

This looks like a great festival!  Your story of your childhood was great...riding horses through the orchards must have been a ton of fun! ;)

09/27/2007 12:03 AM by Patrick Canavan - Orange County Real Estate Voice (Prudential California Realty)

Good morning Patrick,

Thanks for visiting this post !  It was a beautiful area back then.....the town was smaller, safer and the orchards crept into the borders of the town. When the blossoms were in bloom, the whole town had a sweet heavenly scent. All of those orchards are gone now and the ones that remain are further out .....developers bought up the land and built subdivisions and big box stores and strip malls.

The festival is a huge attraction every year....

Wonderful post, Jo, I rated it a 5.  Great photos.  Pennsylvania is noted for apples, too, and we have apple festivals in northern PA at this time of year.

Thanks Brian !  I can't claim credit for the photos....they're from a photo site.  This weekend I'll take many of my own photos though. On Sunday my Mother and I are going apple picking so I'll take some then too.

I didn't know that Pennsylvania was noted for it's apples too....perhaps the apples that ended up in this area were brought here from down there in the old pioneer days. I have to look up that old 'Johnny Appleseed' story again...   ((-:

Good evening Brian,

We didn't end up going apple picking as my Mother would have had to have been back to her summer place by early afternoon for a committee meeting .  Then she and my brother were going to go today, however she found  some fresh picked apples at the market and bought them instead. My Mother has the energy of a 17 year old...she is always on the go and is in so many different groups she's never home! When she was a teenager she was a cheerleader and played on many high school teams as well, including women's hockey...she's never slowed down since. She's very positive and lives life to the fullest. She's also very extroverted and her laugh carries for a long distance (everyone always recognizes her laugh).

I take more after my Dad in that I'm quieter and not in all of these different social groups like she is. She is an avid reader though and she usually finishes a book every two days. She also has a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.
