QR codes are for the quool kids, you have GOT to get you some of these...

If you have not seen one of the latest and greatest tools we have at our disposal...you MUST take a minute to check it out.   I was lucky enough to attend the RE/MAX of Texas Statewide convention in Austin last week where I was introduced to this thing they call the QR Code.

It is simple, quick and a great marketing tool.  Here is how it works...

1.  Go to www.goo.gl (make sure you log in to your Google account so you can save your codes)

2.  Copy and paste a website you would like to market in the "place your long url here" box.

3.  Click on ---> "shorten it"

4.  Click on the "details" tab for the short url you just created.

5. Save the picture associated with the url.  It looks like this ---------->

Now here is the REALLY cool part...

Print that code and you can put it on any print material you use for marketing.  Consumers can use the qr scanning app available on most phones to scan the code.  Once the code is scanned they will be taken to the website you designated for the individual code.

Feel free to give it a try (if you don't have the app, search for the FREE "qr code scanner" in your app store).  Once you have it downloaded scan the code above.  I made it for one of my listings...go ahead and try it out, I'll wait...

*waiting*

Sooooooo...what did you think???

Here are some examples of how you can use these codes.

  • Create an individual website for each of your listings and post the code for that website on your yard sign...voila! No more stinkin' fliers needed!
  • Create a video introducing yourself to consumers, post the video on you-tube and create a QR code for the back of your business card directing folks to the video.
  • Create a virtual tour of your listing and put its QR code on all marketing material for that particular listing.
  • Create a QR code for your website and use it on all farming material.
  • Create birthday, anniversary, welcome home, etc. videos, post them on your you-tube channel and add the QR code to the card you were sending your clients and friends on their special day.
  • I know there are probably tons more...feel free to add to my list!

Did I mention the best part of this whole thing????

It is absolutely completely 100% FREE!! Of course you will invest some time, which we all know is not free and you might have a small cost in materials...but no more than you probably already invest in print material.   I am sure there will be a learning curve for some consumers that may not be aware of what these codes are and how the app works, but hey that's just another chance to field phone calls and educate the public, right?!?

Imagine how many sign calls we will get with a "What in the world is that thing on your sign?" type question.  Good way to open up dialog with potential new clients!

I am in the process of putting these guys on all my listings and my next set of business cards will definitely have one too...I can't wait to see how it all works out.

Oh....one last hint, make sure that the links you send are "mobile web friendly" otherwise they might look funky on some phones.

If you already use QR codes please feel free to share your thoughts!

We started our QR code several months ago.   You have to savvy clients to use it but I use mine in the store to price compare etc.

Our broker introduced our networking group to this concept around Christmas.  I am not sure how many of our agents are using them yet but we have had them on the KW magazine since before Christmas.

We haven't really used ours on our listing signs yet  but have considered it.

Good idea about the video for the business card.

Thanks.

Endre - Thank you!  The code is saved as a picture so you should just have to add it like any photo to your signature line but what I have heard from the experts, is that you don't want to use them on your "online marketing" because the people looking at your website, your blog, etc are already on a computer and can get to your info from the site they are on.   Hope that helps.

Mark -  Thank you..I will definitely check it out!

Faye - that is very true...it should definitely be a hit for the tech type clients!  I am sure having fun playing with them.  I am sure we have just gotten to the tip of how they can be used!

I'm still a littler skeptical about these qr codes. I wonder if they'll last or if it's a fade.

QR codes rock! I really like the birthday video idea. I can imagine some of my sellers opening a card with only a QR code inside and it linking to the video. What a great idea!

Andres - I agree that we will have to see, but I really think they have a lot of possibilities, especially for our tech savvy clients.   The greatest part about them is that they are easy to use and free...so there's not much risk in giving them a shot.

Kay - Aren't they great?  I can't wait to see what they do for our websites!  I would love to hear how they go for you!

Hi Stephanie,

Great post!  I am one of the founding partners of Clikbrix.com.  One thing that must be reiterated (as you point out) is that all QR Codes must resolve to a mobile website.  It's not a few a few phones that will render websites wonky - it's all phones!

This is where Clikbrix comes in.  We provide a turnkey (branded) mobile site for Realtors and of course the QR Codes that are attached to each page of you Clikbrix mobile site.  This means we also offer detailed reporting and tracking on the activity of each of your mobile pages and property listings.

For you and all of your readers we are excited to offer a free 3 month trial.  Just send an email to info@clikbrix.com with the subject line Stephfree3.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Erik
