PORTLAND IS GREEN

Portland, Oregon was recently chosen as one of 10 greenest cities in the U.S. This is admirable for a city considering the continuous  trash, traffic, and pollution that a city this size generates.

Straddling the banks of the Willamette River, Portland has long made sustainable living a priority. More than 30 years ago, when many cities were building freeways, Portland tore down a six-lane expressway to make room for a waterfront park. Since then the city has set an urban growth boundary to protect 25 million acres of forest and farmland, erected more than 50 public buildings that meet tough standards set by the United States Green Building Council and started a solid-waste program that recycles more than half of the city's trash.

Portland, Oregon is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the U.S. Portland's public transportation systems boast a high rate of ridership. Add in one of the nation's largest city parks- Forest Park has 74 miles of running, biking and hiking trails - and the choice of  Portland  as one of the nation's 10 greenest cities makes sense.

Amy - I have read so much about Portland lately! That is awesome!

Can you link to the article? Was it the one on MSN? Grand Rapids, Michigan shows up as one of the 5 cities that are Greener Than You Think. We need to make that top 10 list next year!

Go Portland!  It's too bad that no one that knows the Willamette River would dare set foot in it... yet -

Amy,

I think that MAX also adds to our greenness (hey is that a word?) We have an excellent mass transit. Thanks Amy for reminding us how lucky we are to live in a city that really cares!

I hope to visit Portland in the next couple of years. I've been to every other part of the country, but as close as I've gotten to Portland is the east side of the Oregon mountain range.
