This is my son the first weekend I met him. He was about 22 months old that day in October when his dad (my new boyfriend, now husband of 14 1/2 years) and I took him to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. I fell in love that day. Who wouldn't with that smile and that mop of curly red hair? Beyond those adorable good looks, it was his sense of humor and the compassion I saw in him, even at such a young age, that truly hooked me!
I remember many years ago, after their dad and I got married, we talked about finding a nickname for me. The boys had a mom who loved them very much, so that name wouldn't work. I asked the boys to think about it. A few weeks later I asked them if they had come up with anything. With a very serious expression, my son looked at me and said "I think......Sasha". Needless to say, we stuck with Bridge!
I have been blessed to be a part of his life for almost 20 years. I have watched him grow into an amazing young man. His work ethic was evident very early on, always trying his best. His quick wit kept us on our toes, never a dull moment. He was always quick to help and loved to learn new things. His compassion for others and his passion for life are noticeable in everything he does.
We had a few hard years, but his dad and I never let him forget we loved him, no matter how hard he and his brother tried. Ahhh, teenagers!
We saw a major turn-around in him when he graduated with honors from basic training. What a proud day that was for his dad (a career soldier) and me (an Army Brat). Life took him on a different path, and for reasons that are not mine to share, he was honorably discharged from military service. He went home, worked hard and decided that he wanted to be a police officer. When that kid makes up his mind, don't bother getting in his way! He took a position as a transport officer with the Sherrif's department. He loved it, and was good at it.
Recently he interviewed with the local police department and was told the job was his if he wanted it. Of course he wanted it! Star City is lucky to have him, and I know the folks in that area should feel just a little safer today now that he has been sworn to protect and serve.
Way to go Bill! Your dad and I are bursting with pride. I thank God every day that you were part of the package deal that came with marrying your dad. Stay safe, work hard, and know that your "other mom" loves you very much and will continue to keep you in my prayers...always. Go get 'em!
