Choosing Your Own Address

Cybersquatter, n. Person who buys a domain name with the intent of later selling it at an inflated price.

Some people feel that all the good domain names are taken. It's true that cybersquatters have pursued almost all the acronyms and one-word phrases they can think of, leaving the small businesspeople to scrounge for names that don't seem half as catchy as Yahoo!® and Amazon.com™.

But a domain name does not have to be the name of your business. It just has to make sense! Let me suggest some rules to follow:

Think of keywords people will use to search for your business. Including those words in your name can help boost your search engine rank, as well as being memorable. Let's consider John Doe, who sells homes in Miami, Florida. www.johndoe.com is a lousy choice for a Real Estate agent, because nobody knows that's what John Doe does for a living! www.johndoerealty.com is a much better choice.

Remember your locale! www.miami-homes-and-condos.com is even better for John, and is probably available. If not, he could try www.miami-condos-and-homes.com, or www.miamifloridahomes.com, or any number of variations.

Don't worry about finding a name that is easy to remember. Remember: 99% of the visits to most websites come from clicks and links from other sites, whether it is a search engine, a directory, or a previous bookmark. That means only 1% of your visitors need to be able to remember your name and type it in. Encourage visitors to bookmark the pages of homes they like so they can come back later.

You can use more than just letters - hyphens and numbers are valid, too. Also, your name doesn't have to be a.com (for company ) just because you're a business. The extensions.net,.us, and.biz are all valid for any company or individual to use.

Be careful about homonyms that might confuse people. A Real Estate agent specializing in beachfront or riverfront properties might think www.reelestate.com would attract fishermen, but it will probably also make some people think he just doesn't know how to spell.

I hope these rules are helpful for you. Remember, a domain name costs less than $10, and can point to an existing website with little difficulty. If you already have a website, but think of new names you'd like to use, it's very little trouble to get them up and going in less than a week.

I am an accidential cybersquatter - does that count?

I bought some domains - with the intention of starting a company or posting a property for sale, and then it's useful life expired.

If you know anyone interested in anything particular, like nonmedicalhelpers.com or that kind of thing, email me at propertyauctionsusa.com

I actually have lived in Maui and we have a whole bunch of Realtors for our Hawaii area.  It was so hard to get any good domains.  I now am looking at .tv ones for the future.  Tech is getting so advanced.

Gary, don't do the .tv and any of the other ones only .com or you will just be helping the owner of the .com

URL Cybersquaters.  When all this URL stuff started, the Domain Registrar Companies; Sedo, Go Daddy, Network Solutions, etc., hoped to create a market of selling these names for huge bucks.  Thank goodness it did not pan out.  If you have ever cruised thru Go Daddy and seen the insane prices folks are trying to sell domain names for it is laughable.  I think one of two more years of URL squatting and the rage will fade away.

Gary - put on the ol' thinkin' cap.  I had a similar problem in Panama City Beach FL.  Keep after it and you will get something good.  I came up with at least 25 over a two week period.

MauiLanai.com is available. Live-In-Maui.com is ava., LiveInMaui.com is not.  maui-island-homes.com is ava.  mymauilanai.com is ava., MauiHomesRealty.com is a 'cash parking site',   mauihomerealty.com is ava. I'd grab that fast.  wauimaui.com is ava.  Damn I am good.  MauiHomesToday.com is ava.  How many more would you like.   When one of these .coms makes you a Maui Top Producer, I am coming out for a visit!

I was initially disappointed (about a decade ago) that I couldn't get my name.com.  I was lucky that didn'nt happen in retrospect.  ::whew::

Other recommended characteristics of a good domain name include:

  1. Make the domain name as short as possible therefore making it easier to remember
  2. Avoid numeric references, they are too confusing (ex. move2maui.com)
  3. I agree with Hayden, stay with the .com extension.
  4. Contrary to popular belief, many good domain names are still available.
  5. If you don't use a geographical reference in your domain, use a demographic target reference (a.k.a. Mauivacationhomebuyers.com - It's available!)
  6. With only 5% of Realtors blogging, be forward thinking and buy many good blog domain names now! They are plentiful, so get out there and buy a bunch. Besides, it's cheap.
  7. Even if you don't use the domain to point to your site, at least you're keeping them out of the hands of your competitors! Another reason to be a domain junkie...we are..we own over 650.
  8. Remember - domain names are like fine wines, the older they get, the better they are for your online presence. (Caveat - You must be using the domain and have relevant, original content on it to gain any SEO benefit.)
  9. Vanity domain names are worthless unless you are a celebrity.

I trust that adds to the discussion.

I agree that vanity names are worthless..  My main site is www.ReneeBurrows.com.  How many people are going to want to buy that when I retire?  I do own over 60 domains pointed to several different pages within my site.

Urban Legend?  Many are saying that if you point multiple domains it will penalize you in google.  I don't think this is true (according to me) but some are dead set it is.  Your thoughts & feelings please!

I have a long domain name lowjumbomortgagerates.com -- I have been thinking about shortening

it. I agree that it's just a click to get to me--but what about future clicks from the same person? I'm

not sure what to do. thanks-mike

I keep it simple, I just use RapidFunder.com, it is catchy, short, and to the point.

Thanks for the tips. I wish someone would have told me this before I got my domain name but I'm looking to purchase another.
