WARNING "It's a pyramid scheme!"

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

pyramidsDid you come to see whether I am talking about your brokerage?

Or a multi-level marketing system you are involved in?

I am of course talking about BlogRush.com  Lots of people are saying BlogRush is a pyramid scheme.

I blogged about BlogRush on ActiveRain and my real blog ColumbusBestBlog.com.  I have a nice little pyramid base of my own to balance my ancient Egyptian burial structure on.

Pyramid Scheme according to Wikipedia: "A pyramid scheme is a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, usually without any product or service being delivered."

There is no money involved on BlogRush.com so the claim it is a pyramid scheme misses on that front.  The without any product or service being delivered remains to be seen.  Jeff Reese who is BlogRush has has admitted there are problems.

BlogRush is not going to work for most of us in real estate as developed.  Real Estate is local... I am not going to get traffic from buyers who want to buy in Kansas, New Mexico, Florida, California etc.  We all knew that before we started the test of BlogRush didn't we?

Todd Carpenter warns that people could click off your blog before they decide you are the one to buy or sell real estate with.  Of course they can. Are they going to click off my wonderful content for a blog about Luxury homes in Florida or FSBO's in Canada? They could.

I have to kind of laugh at Teri L's entry about getting traffic the old fashioned way.  "What's the Rush? Or, why I'll get my hits the old-fashioned way- I'll earn them. (Members Only)  Yeah, I'm just one of those crappy bloggers hoping for BlogRush to get me lots of traffic on my blog since there's no content there.

I think the one click Teri sees in her MyBlogLog.com is me coming over to see if she was one of the bloggers who put the widget on and then removed it. To check if she is one of the bloggers where the  feed is showing up without having the widget on her blog.  I took the opportunity while I was there to look to see if there was any new content to read... no not really.  Oh well Teri is on my blogroll I'll just keep checking back for updated content.  Or I won't.

There is potential in the idea behind the BlogRush widget. I want a widget with Columbus content only, Columbus sports blogger, Columbus food bloggers, Columbus political bloggers (while I won't put them on my blogroll, I would put them on a widget but that is a whole 'nother discussion.) Not other local real estate content and not non local real estate content.  Yes I have the food, sports etc.  bloggers on my blogroll, yes I read the Columbus bloggers on my blog reader but it would help my readers find their great content (or not) if there was an RSS feed when their blogs are updated.  That's what I want in a syndication widget.

A widget like BlogRush with current feeds from local bloggers would take up a lot less space in a sidebar than my current blogroll does.  Readers looking for local content would only have to click on headlines that interest them. The reader does not actually click away from the blog. Can they leave my blog? Of course they can.

The good news from BlogRush... They'll soon have different flavors of the widget (colors)

The bad news from BlogRush  These are my stats:

Current Credit Balance: 3,328.50
Credits Earned Today: 1,557.50

This part... is sad.   Over the weekend Jay Thompson wrote he'd had two clicks and that is twice my clicks

Syndication Activity

  IMPRESSIONS CLICKS

LAST 7 DAYS 6,447 1
LAST 30 DAYS 6,480 1

So no, there is not any rush of traffic coming from BlogRush.  If you have not put it on you are not missing out on anything other than an opportunity to learn about widgets, RSS, syndication, networking and people like Jeff Reese. Can you keep your blog pretty, pristine and widgetless and learn as much? We'll see.

Darren Rowse of Problogger.com has blogged about BlogRush three times.  Rowse does not have the widget on ProBlogger but he does have it on other blogs and he is disappointed...with the traffic.  I think he said he'd had 35 clicks.

What Are Your BlogRush Statistics Like?

Rowse wrote: "On the negative side - while my headlines have been shown around 70,000 times I've only had 35 clicks on them. That is an extremely low Click Through Rate of 0.05%! I didn't expect it to be high but thought it might have got somewhere in the 1% range (which would have brought in 700 clicks from the 70,000 - but this is pretty disappointing."

He's disappointed, one click... darn.. I am going to have to earning my traffic the "old-fashioned way...." writing good content... oh noooooooooooo...

Very funny, with some valid points. I would love it if we could specialize for local news. Then I think the click through rate would go up. I've seen yours come up on mine. I watch it when I am on, and I have seen mine come up. How did you check the click through rates, I can't even log back on, which I emailed them about. Where is the log on ? Thanks, Maureen.

OK no more "Nice article thx for sharing" type comments.  I will delete them.  Move along if that's all you have to say.

Missy thy to go in through  BlogRush.     and you should see your dashboard.  You may need to sign in.

See even with a melted brain you can write so much more than "Nice article thx for sharing"  Thanks Chris.

Charlie, I am sure they expected more of a rush than they got.

Crud, I was going to write "Nice article thanks for sharing!"

Anyhow, thanks for this long review.  The jury is still out for me in regards to blog rush also!  Thanks for sharing your stats too.  I have had 959 hits with zero click through.  I now am more familiar with how many impressions it takes to get a click.

Oh well, as you said, now we have just learned a little bit more about widgets, RSS, syndication and viral marketing :)  Glad I didn't spend too much time on it!

Just to clarify: I did not call you crappy blogger. I didn't imply you were a crappy blogger. I didn't imply anyone who uses BlogRush is a crappy blogger. The headline refers to the fact that I'm using content (or not, as the case may be) to pull readers, not a new fangled widget. That's all that was implied.

Also, fwiw, I had one hit that I verified from another BlogRush widget last week, I thought it was a fluke of some sort. When your BlogRush widget showed up, I knew I had a problem.

As always, Maureen, "Nice article thanks for sharing!"

Hi Maureen,

I don't know how exactly you do it, but I get a daily email from google of blogs and articles about Home Staging, and I see your name out there A LOT!  I'm guessing your key strategy is good content.  Btw - I'm a buckeye too...from Worthington.  My family is still there, so I visit every year or so.

Renee: Did you do the widget?  Adding the widget does not take a lot of time or effort.  It can NOT be added on WordPress.com blogs though.  I think a lot of what is being called cheating on BlogRush is really people who changed their minds about putting the blog on but did not follow through on BlogRush's end, so they are showing up in the feeds.

Yeah there are some blogs that have obviously been thrown up to test the widget. Jay Thompson wrote that he saw "bad content"   I am hoping it's bad content in the ways I've seen ( a blog with a couple of entries and a bunch of Google ads) rather than bad content in the way that ended up the online forum attached to Roberta Murphy's  blog, a month or so ago. When I first started blogging in 2005 I found a bunch of Columbus blogs  via a site set up for Columbus Blogs.  It was a blogroll of Columbusblogs with very little blog or website attached to it.  It was great for awhile but  got over run with the raunchiest spam I have ever seen.  I don't want that kind of traffic. As much as I would like something local I would want to be sure I could filter out content some of the promises made on BlogRush.  Are those promises being kept by BlogRush?  I have set up filters but see headlines with words I have filtered out.

"Adding the widget does not take a lot of time or effort" so the results are in proportion IMHO.  What I have learned about RSS, syndication and networking has been of more value. Could I or would I have learned as much without putting the widget on my blogs?  By reading about others experiences?  I don't believe so.

Teri: I implied I am a crappy blogger.

I wonder if many have tried to remove the account from BlogRush.com.  Obviously just removing the Widget is not all that is necessary to not show up on other blogs. Eventually it sounds like BlogRush will remove the accounts but why not follow through. Obviously it takes a little more effort than removing the widget html.

Susan:   I will have to look at what market you are in.  I want a local stager guest blogger on ColumbusBestBlog.com, if you run into one in Central Ohio send them my way please!!!

I wouldn't rush for the traffic but I am enjoying watching the stats in an odd sort of way.  I have a second click now!  I am sure it is another real estate blogger... I have someone in my 5th level now... building the base of my pyramid....

I would not do it for traffic Sandi.  Thanks for the comment.

The new flavors are live but I can't even get in to change mine, BlogRush has got traffic!

Shocking Changes in BlogRush post on John Reese's Income.com blog There is a good  post a few days earlier about nothing ventured, nothing gained, learning from BlogRush.

The BR dashboard is under reporting...I  have 5 clicks on my Discover Columbus Blog according to Google Analytics

widget.blogrush.com / referral
5 1.00 00:00:00 80.00% 100.00%

but none on ColumbusBestBlog.com which is odd since I post more to CBB than to Discover Columbus.

I did not think I knew Yaro Statak until I got to his site.  I was on his site yesterday...  it's a small world. I laugh at his comment "I hope John decides to offer a way to convert credits into cash - I'd be rich! "  that's why I have hoarded my ActiveRain points...  someday maybe... or maybe not.

I am glad he said "27 clicks from 11,000+ impressions is a terrible click through rate, but I don't think it's fair to judge BlogRush too early."

The people who are judging BlogRush as a failure may be right.  I think a lot of them have a flawed understanding of RSS and a funny inflated idea about the value of their content to the average reader.

Real estate is different though because it is local. I think the thing Statak says about the Widget learning the content which has the best click through rate is interesting.  "John  says BlogRush will learn which of your blog articles pull the best click-through rate and circulate more of that article so you get more traffic."

I don't think it is a pyramid scheme but it is definitely a pyramid.  I wish I had Darren Rowse's or Yaro Statak's base.  I see the headlines in the widget as headlines. not as ads. Widgetbox... the  Widget that I have here just above BlogRush I notice those on blogs and read the headlines, they are not ads.  I don't understand the people who use it on ActiveRain to list their 5 latest ActiveRain headlines, but if it works for them, who am I to judge.  To me it makes more sense to use AR to get traffic to your real blog, of course not everyone has another blog.  I want a cross between WidgetBox and BlogRush where I can plug in local non real estate blogs and provide local info to my readers that way.  Of course if that was available some would still worry about losing control  of the readers.  As if they have control.

Maureen- Thanks for posting this information.. I'm going to hold out for awhile.. truth is there are so many widgets out there that many blogs are beginning to be way too crowded with stuff..  I agree with you that I would like to see something like this for our local area blogs.. that sounds like a winner..

BREAKING NEWS: SHOCKING CHANGES AT BLOGRUSH! (Click to learn more.)
Your Dashboard statistics are currently unavailable. We're in the process of doing some server maintenance and hope to have your statistics back up very soon. Rest assured that all of your account activity (from syndication credits to referrals to click-tracking) is all working fine. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We have not been able to see our stats for awhile but we can read about the shocking changes... they certainly have a sense of drama!!

I wish we could put BlogRush lower on the sidebar in ActiveRain, I have it much lower in the sidebar on both of my other blogs.  Thanks for the comment Kay

Jeff that sounds like something that should come out of a fortune cookie...

For anyone who joined BlogRush and subsequently took the widget off their blog but did not remove their blog from BlogRush  here are the directions on how to take the blog off the feed on others blogs.

Thanks to Amit Solomon who answered my question about how to do it.  I had looked for it on BlogRush as soon as I realized there was a huge problem with this.

Amit Solomon Says:
September 27th, 2007 at 3:48 am

Here's how you remove your blog from BlogRush:

(Taken from the FAQ)

At this time, we are requiring that you send your request to support@blogrush.com with "Delete Blog" in the subject line, as well as a description of the blog(s) you would like deleted, and we'll manually delete your chosen blogs for you.

- Amit

I asked on the Income.com blog for those here who are showing up in the feeds but are not showing a feed on their blog.
