I chose this spot to view the Space Shuttle Discovery launch because I liked the fact that the Ospreys were also in the target area and I had plenty of time to kill before lift-off. This family did not disappoint us. The trips round and round with their fresh catch secure in their talons was in itself a sight to see. If you've never seen an Osprey snatch it's victim out of the water it is a sight to behold. Not today, but at other times I've witnessed them get a little too greedy with their prey and have difficulty staying airborne with the heft of the fish. In this vicinity there is also a high concentration of Bald Eagles cruising the air waves in and around the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge just to the North (left) in this picture. It's ironic that these species can thrive in an environment which is the cumulative effort of nearly all of our Earthly sciences within their same proximity. Hard to say whether they're looking out for our successes or us theirs. In any event, it's refreshing to see and gives the impression of a healthy life for all. Surprisingly, Ospreys mate for life and the result appears to be a magnificently successful way to thrive!
Kevin, Great photo. I live and boat in the upper Chesapeake Bay area and the Osprey is a beautiful bird to watch. We also have a small bald eagle population. Thanks for the post and great information.
Keith, anything water related and I'm in. The Chesapeake is a special place for sure with mine being more Eastern Shore related. I hope you were you able to catch the Shuttle launch I posted just prior to this?
Kevin,
What a wonderful shot. I love watching the pelicans dive bomb for their meals, and I love watching them in flight. Water birds are a treat. A
Alexandra, the Pelicans were plentiful too, doing their dive-bombing thing. My favorite sight for them is when 8 or 10 of them play follow the leader ever so effortlessly a foot or so above the water. I'm not sure if they go after mullet but they were everywhere jumping like crazy also. Egrets, Ibis and Heron waded in the tide pools most of day unaware of the upcoming man-made bird's launch. They remained unphased at T - 0.00.
A great shot Kevin!
It can be posted in a gallery...
Have a great weekend!
Joshua, I would love to see it there but it would take a lot of convincing. Thanks!
Kevin, i saw a number of osprey nests in the strangest places...one on top of the football stadium lights at a high school...amazing birds...best
Ginny, they are flourishing well here but have lost some of their population in your neck of the woods. Their migration your way will begin soon, let me know if you spot any. Sometimes called the Sea Hawk or Fish Eagle they can make their way to Canada and Maine although in lesser numbers of late.
Kevin, This is a beautiful shot with this Osprey proudly perched on top of this old pier. As your post mentions, it's really amazing to consider that the Kennedy Space Center sits on a wildlife refuge. There are over 140,000 acres, with over 1500 different plants and animals. There's some beautiful wildlife that can be seen along this area. You know, I never get tired of visiting the Kennedy Space Center. There's so much to see and to learn. In September, they offer free admission for Brevard County Residents, and they allow us to bring friends along. It's a favorite trip (just 40 minutes north) for me. I've been 5 years in a row. And, I'll be there this year, too. We're so blessed to live in such an incredible place.
I can't wait until this September Sandy, Astronaut Experience here I come!
Do they need a listing agent for the shack?
Very interesting take Kevin!
It's not for sale! The present occupants have have a life estate there Renee, hopefully they'll make it to 2021. Average life expectancy is 10 years. I'll call the ShackDiva when they vacate, how's that!
Hey Kevin,
Did you know that the osprey is superior at fishing more so than eagles, and eagles will often steal fish from the osprey? I can just imagine seeing wildlife in its natural habitat. Maybe I should put that on my bucket list! =D
Dee, raptors are pretty tough birds but you're right if an Eagle sees the opportunity it'll go the easy route. We have the Everglades, Big Cypress Swamp and very locally Rookery Bay National Estuarine Preserve which has an abundance of all species right in our back yard. Once you get in tune with it you'll find a ton of natural beauty, flora and fauna so close by you'll wonder how you missed it. No bucket list needed, it's right under your nose!
Great picture! I love it when humanity actually builds something that Mother and Father Nature’s other creatures can also use. JJJJ
And even there Russel, the cohabitors of tern and osprey are in harmony too it seems.
