For the eighth consecutive year, ARC of Rockland will put on American Ideal, a singing contest for Rocklanders with intellectual disabilities. ARC's roots trace back more than 50 years, and the organization serves local individuals with developmental disabilities. ARC orchestrates and runs summer camps, autism spectrums, senior citizen programs and recreational activities from its Congers campus.
"We created American Ideal around the time American Idol began "It's a self-esteem builder, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who compete."
About 50 to 60 individuals audition each year from Rockland and Westchester Counties, about a dozen are selected to go on to the finals.
The finalists will then rehearse for about four weeks, working on music and stage presence. The rehearsals culminate in a show open to the public.
Free auditions begin Saturday, March 5 at the ARC complex. (25 Hemlock Drive, Congers.) Judges will select the most talented singers from three categories: teen, 20-somethings and adult. The finals will be held April 8.
If interested, contestants should register in advance by contacting Mary Ellen McCosker at (845) 267-2500. Those auditioning should bring a CD or tape to accompany them.
