Surviving Your Serengeti - What Will You Learn?

I'd taken the What Animal Am I Quiz a couple of weeks ago and after reading the description of the Graceful Giraffe (and how well it resonated with me) I couldn't wait to learn and read more about this parable of survival skills.

Then along came the Active Rain Challenge which offered advance access to the book's first two chapters - very cool!!!

I've read these first two chapters a few times - it's an easy read and a story that draws you in AND makes you think.  The backdrop of the Serengeti certainly doesn't hurt either but the message and lessons are interwoven strongly even in the first two chapters.

I found myself identifying with one of the main characters "Sean" as he keeps checking his phone for some sort of signal - totally disconnected from phone and email....what IS that?!?!

But as Sean eventually gives up on the technology connection we all rely so heavily on it's a good lesson for the reader - Stop, Let Go and Give In to the journey that this book is about to take you on, you'll gain much more by letting go and taking it all in.

After these first two chapters I'm even more eager and excited to read the rest of this tale and being able to absorb the life and business skills that we can learn from the Serengeti animals.

A few things that stood out to me:

- Animals in nature don't try to control their environment, they "go with it" and adapt, move, change and adjust in a never-ending quest for not just survival but in a quest to thrive regardless of conditions

- It takes all kinds.  While the wildebeests may be the dominant and most numerous species they're by no means alone on the Serengeti.  In the real estate industry we too have all kinds of styles, personalities, "animals" and one of the things I love best is that there is no one-size fits all approach or style

- Respect for the surroundings.  The Serengeti wildlife depends upon their surroundings but they don't (seem to) go through it with the intent to destroy.  There's a balance, a sort of give and take that seemed evident.  Hmmm, perhaps we in the business world could take note?

If you haven't taken the What Animal Am I Quiz, take a few minutes to do it!  To get the first two chapters of the book to download and read - visit the ActiveRain Serengeti Challenge

What you will take from this book and it's message is of course up to you. I'm thinking for me at least it's going to take several times reading it, letting it soak in and really considering what it means to me and what I can learn.

But whatever animal you are In the "Serengeti of Real Estate or Life".....I hope it helps you not just to survive but learn to thrive!

Thanks Roy!  I love your photos, they're beautiful :)

Thanks Tony, Nice to meet a fellow giraffe :)

Gay, guess I could've included some of the Giraffe description, oops - it mentions a focus on how we interact with and relate to others, "Grace" as a skill we can all learn or enhance.  Interesting stuff!

Diane, great observation. I'm working on being more like a giraffe - go with the flow and adapt to changes quickly. I love this book, and will be reading it several times.

Elizabeth, I'm still working on the "quick" part of adapting myself, I think it'll definitely be a repeat read too
