IMG_0447.JPGNow that the North Fork of Long Island has played host to our out of town summer visitors and fall is making it’s predictable appearance, the second
wave of visitors fast approaches. Fall in the the North Fork offers the beauty of changing colors, beaches less traveled, and…CORN MAZES.

My first foray into a corn maze took place with my niece and nephew a few years ago. Not knowing what to expect, we entered with a bit of adrenaline. At
the risk of ruining the experience for those planning to visit, just know to expect the unexpected, and laugh harder than you thought possible. I liken it to an outdoor haunted house, with more laughs and less gore. Hokey, effective, and FUN- and a day I’ll cherish with the kids.

There are several corn mazes available for the brave, with locations both on Main Road and the North Road (Sound Avenue). We happened upon Krupskis farm in Cutchogue- when they’re fully ready, this is a veritable Halloween feast for the senses. In addition to the corn maze, they offer a haunted “barn”. Pumpkins are available, as are gourds, front door decorations, and assorted Halloween goodies.

IMG_0439.JPGWe are going to try Harbes corn maze on North Road this year- it’s just too tempting to pass up. Larger than some that we’ve seen, the maze appears to go on forever- and we’re hoping to get the same laughs that we enjoyed a few years ago.

Plan on picking up your pumpkins (or, literally picking your pumpkin), enjoying fresh roasted corn, and an array of fresh vegetables and pies- and bring along your camera. If you find that you’re laughing as hard (or harder) than the kids, well…you’re in good company!

We used to pick up a pie from Lewins every Friday.  Are they still around and do they do a fall event like this?

Laurie - I would not get in a corn maze because I probably would not be able to find my way out. Yes fall is here, let the fall activities begin.

Is that huge pumpkin real? As for mazes...I don't even go through the pineapple ones. haha.

Laurie, I've never been in a corn maze, however they do look like fun. They have them here too.....
I love how the pumpkins look in the fields this time of year.

It sounds like you had a riot with your nephew and niece !

Laurie, I love this stuff!  I can't carry the pumpkings I want anymore, I'll have to get a wagon :)  I hadn't heard of the corn mazes; I am STILL missing things on Long Island! Thanks for the "heads up."

Laurie - A corn maze sounds fun! I have never been to or seen one. I mean here in Indiana where corn is abundant and noone thought to create a maze. Pumpkins, we have those and the fall colors are starting to appear, telling me the season is a changing.

Jeff, Lewins is still around, and you've just given me another place to visit.  I've stuck to the east-east end, but will take a drive into Wading River to check it out- thanks!

Jennifer, we were laughing so hard through the maze that it wouldn't have mattered if we got "lost"-

Sally Jo, nah- that's not real, but they do have some HUGE pumpkins out here.  Although, the pick your own is less appealing to me than the haunted mazes- I don't mind buying a pre-picked pumpkin.

Jo, you MUST go to one.  You won't regret it, and I want to read what you have to say about it!  Hopefully, your mazes have the charm that these have- no high-tech, just hilarity.

Joan, while I took the photos, I didn't insert them...thank goodness that I have help!  Get out there and "do a maze"- it's good for the soul, those laughs!

Carole, you're missing out on a really funny experience if you don't try a maze- just go when it's not crowded so that you get the "eerie" factor along with the surprises in the maze.

Gary, my foot hurts- thanks!  I'd have taken photos of inside the maze, but...it's one of those "you have to be there" experiences.

Paula, and all- TRY A MAZE!  The farmers and kids out here make them really charming.

Take some pictures for me...as I remember the farm was on North Country Road.

I've been thinking about taking the kids up to see our old home and go to the beaches.

Hi Laurie,
I've never had the corn maze experience but sounds like fun.  Fall is such a great season, my favorite time here on the coast of NC.  You guys had a blast, right?
