Santee parks will soon be welcoming
our fine, furry, four-legged friends
(dogs, that is)!

The East County city of Santee has decided to join the several other cities that have fenced park areas for our dogs to roam freely.

Although dogs previously were allowed to roam without leashes in restricted areas of the parks and during specific times, these new fenced areas for 24 hour roaming will be a first. Unfortunately, the City Council didn't set a date for the fences to be in place.

The parks to have these new fenced areas will be Big Rock, Mast, and Woodglen Vista parks. Until the new fenced areas are in place, the old rules will still apply:

  • Big Rock Park — Dawn to 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Mast Park — Dawn to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to dusk on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

  • Woodglen Vista Park — Dawn to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to dusk on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Various citizen groups are partnering with the city to pay the costs, and any extra funds raised will go to install park benches and perhaps even dog-friendly water fountains.

I hope they will have separate areas by size of dogs, Jim. A friend lost her little dog because of an aggressive big dog in the same area.
