Google Is Tweaking Again

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Search Results for Annapolis Maryland Real EstateGoogle Is Tweaking Again

This morning I woke to NRP an commentator discussing an Associated Press report that Google was tweaking again.

Google has tweaked the formulas steering its Internet search engine to take the rubbish out of its results. The overhaul is designed to lower the rankings of what Google deems "low-quality" sites.

The controversy surrounding the latest tweak is a Google algorithm change designed to rank sites that produce original content and information that Google considers valuable higher under the new approach.  According to Google they make four to five major changes and hundreds of minor changes each year.

Demand Media which operates sites like could be affected by changes in ranking. is a content farm where contributors write articles on hot topics of interest.  Demand Media's business model makes money when it's content ranks high in search engine results and visitors follow the the links to read articles written by contributors whereby Demand Media garners advertising dollars from Internet ads displayed while visitors browse articles.

The impact on site ranking in search results for Demand Media's is that Google could devalue sites Google perceives as producing cheap, abundant, mostly useless content.  Demand Media commented in the AP report that it didn't consider an online "content farm" and defended the value of its content.

The controversy caught my attention since Google's change to its algorithm could affect search result rankings for posts found at ActiveRain as well as any other large content aggregator.  Does Google consider ActiveRain a "content farm" about real estate?  At stake here is the tremendous power that Google has to shape what we find when we search for something, from "how to bake a potato" to "real estate market conditions in Annapolis Maryland".  That's a tremendous amount of power on a global scale.  Let's hope that Google is wielding it responsibly.

When I first built my site I was chasing Google all over the place but in the end decided to make my site user friendly and let the Google chips fall where they may. Since then I have moved up nicely in the ranks.

This is a good point. the algorithm change your referring to I thought went into effect a few weeks ago. Google was after so called "scraper" sites that continually duplicate others content, mainly for advertising income. The question remains how does Google recognize "original content" Active Rain has always been considered Original content by Google thus the high ranked posts. I believe on E How any can repost or reblog a topic so Google very well may penalize them for that.

I have pretty much given up on what Google likes. It is impossible to keep up with them. Frustrating for me is the googlemaps and the pin placement for business. Sigh!
