According to their website, SMA is the number one genetic keller of children under the age of 2. SMA is an inherited and often fatal disease that destroys the nerves controlling voluntary muscle movement, which affects crawling, walking, head and neck control, and even swallowing. Two new-born children are affected each day in the United States, approximately 1 in 6,000 live births. One in every 40 people carries the gene that causes SMA, which means there are more than seven million carriers in the United States alone. Currently there is no treatment or cure.
This is yet another case of families turning tragedy into triumph. My cousin Johnny has friends who lost their child to this disease. They work tirelessly to find a cure so no other families have to endure the hardship of a disease that affects approximately 1 in 6000 babies each year. I first got involved many years ago by attending their annual Crab Feast/Silent Auction. The Chesapeake Chapter also hosts a golf tournament each year.
