YOU'RE LAUNCHING A NEW WEB SITE. THAT'S EXCITING. WHERE TO BEGIN?? SEO BEGINS WITH A GREAT DOMAIN NAME!

SOLD!  GREAT DOMAIN NAME SOLD BY LENN FOR $6,000.

FOR SALE:  About 275 Great Domain Names for real estate web sites (and a few general titles).

IF YOU ARE A REAL ESTATE AGENT OR BROKER in Maryland or Virginia (most Northern Virginia), you may Lennfind a GREAT DOMAIN NAME FOR SALE HERE.  There are also a number of domains that are not Maryland or Virginia oriented.

NO.  Lenn isn't going out of the real estate business.

About 3 weeks ago, I got a short e-mail from a person interested in buying one of my domain names.

"IS THE DOMAIN NAME greatdomainname.com FOR SALE?"

"Yes, it is."  I e-mailed back.  He made an offer, I explained that the site had content and we negotiated an acceptable price.  Sort of like negotiating the sale of a piece of real estate.  Willing buyer and seller coming together on a price acceptable to both.

LENN HAS A NEW ADVENTURE.  That was the beginning of a new adventure for me.  Over the years, I've collected over 400 domain names, most real estate related and most oriented to Maryland or Virginia real estate.  I paid the yearly maintenance fee knowing that one day. . . .  THAT DAY IS HERE.  I've had offers for domain names in the past, but the price offered was never serious.  So, I just held on to them.  When domains "yourtownrealestate" or "realestateyourtown" were becoming scarce, I bought every one I could.

THE FIRST LESSON IN SEARCH ENGINE OPTOMIZATION (SEO) is selecting a GREAT DOMAIN NAME.  I wanted to make sure that, at any time, if I was inspired to add a new web site to my portfolio, I'd have a great domain name redily available.  I always planned to sell a number of them.  I just didn't know when.  Do the math.  I've paid about $4,200 each year to maintain them.

THE DOMAINS WERE SAFE.  They ere all set to renew automatically.  They just sat there, coming up for renewal on a regular basis.   Enom, formerly Bulkregister, kept my domains well organized and when I wanted to launch a new web site or blog, I just went to the list and opened an account on my server to host that web site.  Until I got the offer for one 3 weeks ago while I had sold a couple of domains to local agents, we handled the matter buyer to seller.  Not too complicated.  They pay, I give them the code for them to accept the domain.  If there was content, I moved the content to other pages then deleted the account from my server.   Since this was an out of the country buyer, we used the services of Escrow.com.  Smooth.

"Mmmmm, I said to myself, perhaps it's time. . . . ."

CHECK FOR $6,000.

Escrow Check

IF YOU'VE TRIED TO BUY A GREAT DOMAIN NAME IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, YOU KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS.   "But Lenn, I tried to buy a great domain name but every time I searched for my choice, it was domain for saletaken."  Here I am holding 423 mostly real estate domain names.  Time to sell some of them.

MORE ABOUT GREAT DOMAIN NAMES.  I've just spent two days developing a web site to offer domain names for sale.  Visit this web page and if you see a GREAT DOMAIN that interests you, just give me a call or send e-mail.

SELECT A GREAT DOMAIN NAME.   ALL ARE TOP LEVEL DOMAINS, .COM.

If these folks are using your post to advertise themselves, they are doing a very poor job of it.  Most of us read the comment threads and are open minded enough to take each disagreement with a grain of salt, until they get ugly.  This shows a very unprofessional side, in my opinion.  Trust me, I made a total fool out of myself last week when someone insulted my integrity.  In the end, they lost by accusing me of something that was false.  VERY false and I had the proof to back it up.  This person didn't like my comment and started slinging "crap", that backfired.  They also made MANY enemies by questioning my character, when it was very apparent that their integrity was lacking.

Like I said before, opinions are all welcome here in the Rain, good and bad.  We all love a good disagreement at times.  What is VERY unprofessional is accusing someone of breaking the law and being a downright snot.  THAT is the fastest way to ensure you won't get business.

I"m off my high horse now....carry on, lol.

Hi Lenn-CONGRATULATIONS on doing this. I love the website you set up to sell these domains and it inspired me to buy a few yesterday based on all your information. The SEO people here seem a little bit like the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz when they pull back the curtain--I think you are exposing the secrets for free and as usual helping people here and giving all of your time selflessly...Thank you so much

Elizabeth.  I greatly appreciate the support of the many ActiveRain members whom I consider great friends.  Over the years, I've enjoyed the friendship and friendly competition with many ActiveRain members.  Why the SEO company that attacked me and my efforts to engage in some good old American commercial advertising defies logic.

They used my blog to advertise themselves, sadly, with impugnity.

Oh well.  May efforts to advertise my domains on ActiveRain was quashed, but I still have the Internet world and I know how to penitrate a market via good old Google.

Tim.  GOOD FOR YOU!  Jump right in.   The water is warm and enviting for a short while as these good real estate ralated domain names become ever more hard to get.

I believe that there is a lot to be said for "SUPPLY AND DEMAND".  As the supply of a product, property or service becomes ever more scarce, the price goes up.

Is it any wonder that one of my heros is Adam Smith??

Lenn- Darn! I missed the drama:) And now I see the juicy details are deleted:) Hmmm, now some of the counter posts are starting to make some sense. Interesting! You also just taught me that the FTC is yet involved in another part of the market, that of domain names and the rule you read is very vague on the part of the FTC. They make my list of losers along with the FDA and the IRS. :)

Katerina.  I'll send you a private mail on the subject.  Otherwise, the SEO company that bashed me may go running to ActiveRain whining.

Lenn, I came here through your recent blog about SEO.  Domain names aren't equal in relevance and branding.  I'm just glad that my name is not very common that I was able to purchase it.

I wish I had read the comments that were deleted, so I'd know who not to do business with.  lol

Judging from the other comments the detractors had V-8 moments, "Why didn't I think of that first?"

Lenn, I also invest in quality domains. They are great for SEO when developed, and also carry the possibility for a buyout. Congrats on the sale...

Here are some previous real estate domain sales (not mine): HuntingtonBeachRealEstate.com ($20k), TucsonRealEstate.com (~$50k), BoiseRealEstate.com ($50k), ParkCityRealEstate.com ($60k), CoralGablesRealEstate.com ($6k).  :)

David.  Thanks.  I haven't cited many of those high dollar domain sales because most of them came with web sites attached.

That said, I fully expect the value of good domain names to remain high.  Even if Google downgrades the SEO value, they will still have significant value over an agent's name or names that one attempts to brand.

Matt Cutts can prefer branding and that's fine.  However, branding is time sensitive and can be very expensive.  Keyword rich domain names work TODAY.

OF COURSE, they just get you found.  GOOD CONTENT is what makes the phone ring.

Remember the Millinium when some company paid $1,000,000. for www.Year2000.com then I think paid several more thousand to advertise it during the Superbowl if I'm remembering correctly. Some people will pay good money for a domain name that fits them and their business, whether or not it has much SEO value or not.

Jeff.  Indeed.  What was so perplexing was the AR members, especially the "experts" that claimed that domain names had no added value.  I simply do not know what motivated them to bash my post as they did.  For the SEO guy, I suppose he was looking for business.  For the gal that jumped on his band wagon, she appears to have some objection to free entrprise.

C. Lloyd.  You bet.  Mine are renewed automatically.

Michelle.  HA!  Better go somewhere other than AR because some members will tell you they're worthless.

SaraMana.  You better believe that intellectual property has value.
