What Snack do You Reach For?

What snack do you reach for...do you even think about what you're putting in your body?

Are you tired, run down, need an afternoon nap?  Instead of reaching for an unhealthy snack, think about something healthy.

Did you know it's Girl Scout Cookie time?  Did you know that Do-si-dos have 110 calories for a serving of two cookies?  Thin Mints have 160 calories for a 4 cookie serving. Thin mints are a big temptation for me.  Tagalongs have 140 calories for a serving of 2 cookes and last but not least Krispy Kreme glazed donuts have 200 calories each.  But how many of us actually stop at one serving?

On the other hand...if you reach for a healthier snack like an apple or banana you get much better results.  A banana has 100 calories. Bananas also are full of fiber and one of the best sources for potassium an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. A banana has 467 mg of potassium and only 1 mg of sodium. You can build better bones by eating bananas. An apple has 110 calories and 150 mg of potassium.  According to the latest research, the old saying "an apple a day keeps the Doctor away," is fact and the latest research shows this.  An apple can reduce your cholestoral roughly 10%.  The pectin in apples helps to remove harmful toxins and get them out of your body.  Apples bolster the immune system.

So...next time you reach for something to munch on, try the healthier version.  Your body will thank you!

Kim, I do find that I have more energy when I eat healthy.  However, it's so tempting when those cookies are around.  My favorite are the thin mints.

Kim - If we all ate healthy food during this economic downturn; a lot of fast food restaurants would close; unemployment would soar; the ecomomy would tank and real estate would become more depressed. I, for one, am trying to help the economy by choosing Krispy Kreme!!! LOL

But the Thin Mints are sooooo good! I think it's important to find a balance -- healthier foods most of time with the occasional indulgence. And a healthy dose of exercise after to work off the extra calories.

I used to be a Krispy Kreme girl... until I packed on the pounds.  Now, it's apples and bananas!

Kim:

I'm with Bill.  I love his reasoning.  Actually, I do feel better when I eat healthy snacks.  But I have to have an occasional chocolate candy bar.

Hey Kim,  Girl Scout Cookies...I remember the days. Thin Mints are the best stored in the freezer and eaten right from the box...semi frozen.  But you are right, we need to be much more vigilant to our bodies and good health. Hence, I always buy my share of GS Cookies but then I donate them to the workers in my office who have kids...No cookies, no temtations. DJ

Bill...I hadn't thought about that perspective, I think you may have a point!

Jeff...I should never buy thin mints, they scream out to me to eat them until they're all gone.

Melinda...the white powdery Sweet 16 donuts used to be my weakness, I don't buy them anymore.

Rod...never heard of cottage cheese on Ritz Crackers, I may have to give that a try.

J. A., I love movie popcorn with lots of butter, it's a real temptation for me.

Evelyn...two squares of 70% cocoa dark chocolate is my bedtime snack every night!

Debbei...my thin mints don't last long enough to put in the freezer but I've heard that's a great way to eat them!

Great post Kim.  I always buy 6+ cases of girl scout cookies all from different girls.  Than I buy them at the stores too, where the girls sit outside and sell them.  I love it when a young girl comes up in the beginning of her selling career and asks me to buy.  I than order a case from her and the look on their face is priceless.

My Rachel sold girl scout cookies for 5 years and I was the leader/cookie mom many years over.  I love supporting the girls.

With that said, I don't eat them!!  I keep open cases in my car and give a box away everywhere I go!  It's my own personal, Pay it forward!

If the girl scouts would only take up peddling fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grain snack crackers. :)

Susan, I've never tried mixing the fruits together with juice but it certainly does sound healthy.

Judi...I'm not sure I'd be as good a customer if they quit selling cookies!
