Pay It Forward – Please Don’t Take My Lockbox!

The conversation went something like this---

The voice on the other end of the phone asked, “Are you Keller Williams?” (Something I have been asked before)Lockbox

“No,” I replied. “But I am a REALTOR® with Keller Williams.”

“Well I am looking for the listing agent for the property at 123 Easy Street.  I called a Keller Williams office since it is listed with Keller Williams and all they would tell me is that this home is not listed through their office.”

“I am sitting in front of my computer.  Would you like me to look it up for you?”

“Oh, yes, please if you would.  That would be so helpful!”

I looked up the property and gave the caller all of the listing agent’s information—name, three phone numbers and an e-mail address.

It was only then that she said she was working for a bank that was foreclosing on the property and she was going to be changing locks on the house.  She wanted to give the agent an opportunity to get her lockbox off before she destroyed it removing it.

This has happened to me---only once and I am sure it has happened to many of you.  I was simply amazed.  I told her what a nice thing that was because lockboxes are expensive.  She said she always makes an effort.

She thanked me repeatedly and said I was so helpful that she was going to hold onto my information for when she needed help again. (Yippee!!)  That part was not such welcomed news, but I am glad I was able to help a fellow human being and in the process help a fellow REALTOR!

I paid it forward by preventing another lockbox fatality!

I'm surprised that no one has yet chimed in about the banks and their foreclosure agents who DON'T have the courtesy of calling for things like this!

Pat, that was great of you to help out and SO RARE of the foreclosure contact - we all know how often they WON'T call.  What I don't get, if they're going to change the locks, the key that's in our EXPENSIVE lock boxes will no longer work anyway - so, why destroy our boxes.  Leave them on the ground (if they were on the door knob) or leave them on the water pipe - wherever.  The new key makes our box useless to anyone else.

Bruce--You know, I don't think of it as being especially nice, I just really try to treat people the way I want to be treated---think it must be genetic. :-)

Maggie---Well you sort of missed the point on that part.  There is nothing in it for me if she holds onto my info.  She will just be calling me to look things up for her.  I guess is will be helping other agents, but I would rather be taking calls from buyers and sellers!  See?  I am not so nice after all!!

Shannon--Life yes, business no in this case. :-(

Lynda--You would do the same thing.

Sandra--Just a person helping a person helping a person.

Charles--15 minutes out of my day!

Brenda--But I really did save a life one---blogged about it too. :-)  But this was a close second.

Richard--Makes no sense!  Call the agent to meet you out there---they can let you in and get their lockbox---no big deal!

Juli--Well if they don't know the combo or have a key card, they have to take a hacksaw to the lockbox---unless they call us first!
