When I was finishing up my undergraduate work at VCU in Richmond, I did an internship with the Director of Programming at the Science Museum. The Museum was in its infancy at the time, but it was on its way to becoming the outstanding (and fun!) museum it is today.
Its mission is simple....

"Inspiring Virginians to enrich their lives through science"
You'll find exhibits, events, IMAX films at the IMAX®DOME, and Live Science programs at the Museum.
The special exhibit currently showing at the Science Museum is the "Arctic Adventure".

"Arctic Adventure takes you to the Arctic to explore this fascinating (and cold!) environment, through interactive and artifact-based exhibits and audiovisual experiences.
Visitors will compare bear skulls, compare their own weight to that of a polar bear and learn about the status of polar bears from research scientists. They will examine specimens and test their knowledge of Arctic whales and other animals, observe the amazing adaptations of Arctic plant species and more."
There are other hundreds of amazing experiences for children and adults to explore and learn, including such things as Gravity Alley, Electriworks, Science Unplugged, and the Imagination Playground.
The Museum sponsors a Sky Watch, with scientists and their powerful telescopes, the third Friday of every month.
There are also fun special events adults, such as the upcoming "Martini & a Movie", with cocktails & hors d'oeuvres before a special viewing of the IMAX movie, "Everest".
"Journey across creaking icefalls and gaping chasms, up dangerous, towering cliffs, through a harrowing rescue and into the danger zone of oxygen-thin altitude! "
For details about any of these events, visit the website, Science Museum of Virginia.
Their Facebook page is definitely worth a visit: Science Museum of Virginia on Facebook.
