Wenatchee and Chelan Home Inspection- Getting an Education
When my Grandmother passed she left a legacy behind. One of those is being very well read.
She had traveled by wagon and foot from Saskatchewan to New Mexico in the early 1900's as a 13 year old. Telling me stories of drying clothes on the tall grass prairie and how it was the maybe her most memorable time. (Her dad -my great grandfather- had been diagnosed with rheumatism.)
What she left to us were memories and some artifacts from that era.
One of those was a book called- "Collier Cyclopedia of Social and Commercial". Also known as "Collier's cyclopedia of commercial and social information and treasury of useful and entertaining knowledge on art, science, pastimes, belles-lettres, and many other subjects of interest in the American home circle" Copyright 1882
This was a general knowledge text for those who may not be able to go to a school. It ranged in subjects from grammar and penmanship, foreign languages, etiquette for ladies and gentlemen, how to throw a fair to woman's rights.
Most children before the 1920s had never attended high school. Of those American high school teenagers (this term was coined in the early 1940s) who graduated from high school increased from about 6 percent early 1900's to about 85 percent in 1996.
The GREAT DEPRESSION eliminated many job opportunities for teenagers; the high school became more of a custodial institution at this time. By the 1950s, expectations for education increased, as more Americans increasingly thought that everyone should graduate.
