Lake Property at Fishhawk Lake vs. Other Lakes in Oregon-Part 2

Lake property at Fishhawk Lake means different things to different people. Part 2 goes on to describe some of what Fishhawk Lake has to offer regarding water activities, fishing and weather patterns.

Winds kick up usually in the afternoons for some personal sailing that keep some sailors really happy out on our 50AC lake. I don't see that many, but it doesn't mean you can't. I do see more paddle boats, usually operated by teens or younger kids and kayaks and canoes by both young and old. I happened to look up from my lakefront property yesterday just in time to see a couple of young boys tip over their canoe, but they were only in about 5' of water and virtually stood on the lake bottom to get their bearings and eventually get back in and continue their fun. Because it was a 90+ degree day, I'm sure the water felt pretty good as a welcome relief to the heat anyway!

Our temperatures range about 6-12 degrees cooler than in Portland, the nearest big city. When it's sweltering there in mid August, having lake property at Fishhawk Lake to enjoy is perfect.

The water depths can change from a couple of feet to about nineteen depending upon where you're going. You can kayak clear to the end of Fishhawk Creek, but you will have to turn around, especially in the summer you get to a point where you could literally walk across the stones and go from one side of the creek to the other.  I've kayaked up Fishhaw Creek in August before and just did a u-turn at the end, went under the bridge and was back in the lake--all very easy.

Fishing is a big pasttime here. You can go out on the mist-covered morning lake and catch and keep two cutthroat trout per day or catch some really good-sized steelhead or salmon to catch and release or go out in the rain, sun, what-have-you.  I've watched families go to our little beach at the clubhouse and plunk a line in or fly-fish off the bank. Lures are what is allowed as far as bait. The season is from May to November.

My sister caught this trout less than 10 minutes after she started fishing!

Fall at Fishhawk Lake

We also have a fish ladder and salmon that spawn in the fall/winter and early spring months every year.  THAT is quite an event to watch! Some of the fish literally jump up the ladder, while others are cheek-to-jowl in the smaller creeks, sometimes so thick you could walk on them.  It's such a great experience to share with kids or kids at heart.

You have presented Fishhawk Lake in a very inviting manner, Gayle!  The pictures go so well with your narrative of what the lake has to offer.  I see the fish-any hawks around?

Hi, Walters--Thx for the comment, most appreciated.

I keep trying to get some osprey (fishhawks) and bald eagle photos. Not so easy! Now that I live on the lake we look across at spots where the bald eagle, "fishhawks" and herons all perch, high up in the trees. I'll get 'em sooner or later!

Ah!  The cutthroat trout, one of my favorite fish.  I've caught many of the from Lake Yellowstone.  Catch 2, your limit, get back to the camp site, grill them, eat them for lunch, then out to catch 2 more for dinner.  We often went out to catch 2 more to save for breakfast.

That was som eof the greatest fishing I ever enjoyed.

Isn't that look of glee on my sister's face just SAY IT ALL? Sounds like you understand that feeling, Lenn! You're allowed to catch and keep two per day here. It changed just within the last year, because before it was all catch and release only. The steelhead/salmon are all still protected because we're a Salmon Habitat Project.

Lake Yellowstone virtually teams with fish.  Fish management is very serious there.  The Rangers are everywhere and they don't hesitate to check your catch.

Once you have kept 2 fish and they have to be 13 inches or OVER, you have to stop fishing, which is why we would catch 2, cook and eat them and then go back out.

They don't let you keep the larger fish because they're the breeders.  The problem is, most of the fish we caught were about 16-20 inches.  HA!  That's the only place I've ever fished where the easy fish to catch, over 13 inches were the ones we couldn't keep.

Gayle, great contrast of your lake area compared to other ones around Oregon or elsewhere. Your photos are gorgeous BTW. I love a good fish story. Oh your fish are real LOL.

I LOVE taking photos...have a whole slough of 'em to choose from. Recently connected w/a fellow ARer who has guided me towards picking out a new digital camera. (Mine died).

Most of the pics you'll see are mine...but the elephant one isn't. Haven't made it to Africa yet. Still looking for that eagle to stop long enough for me to shoot--a picture--of course!
