Why does the media often mislead us?

Certain markets boomed more than others in the past few years.  Certain markets didn't boom at all.  Some boomed and are now coming down.  For some, the bottom isn't quite in sight yet.

I run across may articles as I traverse the internet and I came across this one today from money.cnn.com.  The article highlights ten cities that "have just about hit rock bottom" and are good best for investors to put their money into.  Now, I have no problem with some of these cities being promoted as excellent locations for Real Estate Investment.  I invest in a couple of them myself!

But suggesting that they have hit the bottom....to me, this drives at a market(s) where there was huge appreciation followed by a huge drop down to reality.  Its like the Phoenix market...which went up ~ 50% in one year, having depreciatd by say 30% (arbitrary #).  That might be construed as rock bottom...and a good time to buy.

But the cities listed in the article I linked?  Come on, those places never went up in the first place!  They never had 50% appreciation booms.  Homes there didn't go up in value three or four hundred thousand dollars in a couple of years.  If anything, the boom bypassed them and now these cities are quite affordable IN COMPARISON to the places that did boom.

Apologize for my rant!

Thanks for Reading :)

You make an excellent point.  The media seems to always spin the drama in the way it will get the most attention... whether it's taken out of context or not.

Thanks for the comment -- I agree that the media misleads.  So many cities were bypassed to begin with, it's ridiculous to suggest now that they're slumping.

The real estate market is not a national market.  Its a combination of local area with a somewhat common thread.  While some place boom, others bust.  Some avoid it all together.  Every area will have a boom and bust sometime in their history.  The idea is to find the areas before they boom, and get out before they bust.

Don't apoligize for ranting! You are so right. I keep hearing about this supposed slump. I myself have not expeirenced a drop in business. I think that if anything causes a slump it will be the media.

Kaushik:

Great post. So true and unfortunately a part of our daily life is contending with the bad reports in the news. We were in Vegas which also had a huge market jump in price and now is correcting. Homes are still selling however about 30% over 3 years ago. Not a bad appreciation but you won't read those reports in the news.

Amen Caroline, I too have not seen that big of a slump in business, and if it was, I think it was media created. On ABC 20/20 they ran a whole hour on how these families could not sell their properties due to market conditions. I myself think they could not sell because they were to high in the first place. Why didn't they also choose to show places where there is still plenty of activity with a lot of room for growth?

One couple had just bought home just nearly a year ago, and now they want to sell to get another, and expecting to sell for a huge profit. What were they smoking. Why did they buy the house if  they were not going to stay in it any time. From the story they did not want to move because hey had to (job related, etc) but simply that wanted to move to their so called Dream Home.

I have really turned about from the media....newspapers, tv, etc.  They simply feed us what they want.  Thanks for the post.
