Planning your Atlanta Buckhead gardening seasons for all four seasons!
I wish I could say I have a green thumb. Unfortunately, I don’t, but our son seems to. About a year ago he got interested in growing a garden and has tried a variety of vegetables and fruits over the past almost 12 months.
He started in the spring with carrots. The rabbits did a number on them though, just as they started taking off. Those little cute critters are great at searching those out, so we moved on to the next season.
For the summer season, he started watermelons, tomatoes, corn and a few others. The tomatoes didn’t seem to take, but he had tremendous success with the watermelon, growing 20 & 25 lb watermelons. (We weighed themJ) The corn grew tall over 6 feet, even thriving while we were on an extended two week vacation. Unfortunately, the corn didn’t quite get enough water after that and didn’t survive. Again, lesson learned.
In the late summer, early fall he and our neighbor got some peppers going and also had some other successes. For the winter season, we were back at Pikes to check out some other opportunities to grow veggies. We realized the season was getting past us, so this time for the first time, he started with small plants, rather than seeds. He planted Broccoli, Cauliflower and Kale. He’s checked and it didn’t seem like much was happening, but lo and behold, a few weeks later than expected, he’s got broccoli growing and some gorgeous looking kale. The cauliflower didn’t seem to be as happy.
Now, he and the neighbor have a plan to use a square foot gardening concept. They are not using a whole lot of space, so it’s a plan to make the most out of limited space for the next year.
It’s fascinating when you take on something you never have to grow a new skill or garden. What are you trying that is new for you to grow?
