Planning your Atlanta Buckhead gardening seasons for all four seasons!

I wish I could say I have a green thumb.  Unfortunately, I don’t, but our son seems to.  About a year ago he got interested in growing a garden and has tried a variety of vegetables and fruits over the past almost 12 months.

He started in the spring with carrots.  The rabbits did a number on them though, just as they started taking off.  Those little cute critters are great at searching those out, so we moved on to the next season.

For the summer season, he started watermelons, tomatoes, corn and a few others.  The tomatoes didn’t seem to take, but he had tremendous success with the watermelon, growing 20 & 25 lb watermelons.  (We weighed themJ)  Growing crops in a Buckhead yard, picture by Michelle Francis Buckhead Realtor & Proud MomThe corn grew tall over 6 feet, even thriving while we were on an extended two week vacation.  Unfortunately, the corn didn’t quite get enough water after that and didn’t survive.  Again, lesson learned.

In the late summer, early fall he and our neighbor got some peppers going and also had some other successes.  For the winter season, we were back at Pikes to check out some other opportunities to grow veggies.  We realized the season was getting past us, so this time for the first time, he started with small plants, Growing crops in a Buckhead yard, picture by Michelle Francis Buckhead Realtor & Proud Momrather than seeds.  He planted Broccoli, Cauliflower and Kale.  He’s checked and it didn’t seem like much was happening, but lo and behold, a few weeks later than expected, he’s got broccoli growing and some gorgeous looking kale.  The cauliflower didn’t seem to be as happy.

Now, he and the neighbor have a plan to use a square foot gardening concept.  They are not using a whole lot of space, so it’s a plan to make the most out of limited space for the next year.

It’s fascinating when you take on something you never have to grow a new skill or garden.  What are you trying that is new for you to grow?

Michelle, I applaud your son for trying new things to grow! I love the idea, I know better. I don't have the time it takes to put into a great garden. Just tomatoes here, but I should plant beets and kale too. I love beets, love love love beets!

Seems like your son has inherited some of your entrepreneurial skills Michelle. Here's hoping his garden nets the fruits of his labor.

Hi Michelle ~ gardens are always hit and miss. I hope you son will continue with his garden this summer and learn a few more tricks of what will grow and what won't. What a nice size watermelon. Very impressive.

Being from Nebraska I was ignorant and decided to garden here.  I tried peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and cilantro.  Everything died except the cherry tomatoes really did well.  Lesson learned - don't garden in the desert.  I used to be pretty successful at growing everything but palm trees in Nebraska.
