Finding more high-quality sites in search

2/24/2011 06:50:00 PM
Our goal is simple: to give people the most relevant answers to their queries as quickly as possible. This requires constant tuning of our algorithms, as new content-both good and bad-comes online all the time.

More. . . . .

LENN HAS PATIENCE (when there's no choice).  WE'LL WATCH AND WAIT.  How this update will affect real estate agents and others employed in the real estate industry is yet to be seen.  I've tested my site(s) extensively and can't see any difference in SERP for highly search key word phrases.  That said, I did pick up an additional 32 back links on Homefinders.com.  However, I can't really tie that positive change to this algorithm change because it's been my experience for years now that Google updates back links about every 3 months.

QUALITY CONTENT STILL RULES.  Seems that sites that rely heavily on content from other and higher quality sites may see their rankings go down.

LOW QUALITY SITES:  Sites that rely on content from other websites.

HIGH QUALITY SITES:  Sites that offer original content.  Google loves research, reports and analysis.

WAS THERE A "LION COMING OVER THE HILL?"  Threats to Google's supremacy and popularity of it's "search marketing" from "social marketing" sites may have inspired this slight change in direction.  Surely the phenomenal growth of Facebook and Twitter have gotten Google's attention.  If so and if Google responds by improving the search results and thereby improving search marketing that will justify this change.

IF LOCAL CONTENT GAINS IN POPULARITY WITH GOOGLE, small local real estate web sites stand to gain.  Many real estate agents have quality web sites created with the use of original and local content.  If good original local content will help our web site rank higher, good for Google.

"WE CAN MAKE YOU #1 ON GOOGLE".   We've all heard that from the SEO experts.  Will quality local information and content gain over SEO?   We in the trenches who work hard on our Internet advertising may gain slightly over web sites that have been "SEO'd" to the top.

ACTIVERAIN was prescient by emphasizing local content from the outset.  For me, ActiveRain gave me a platform to take my original local content to the top of Google SERP for search terms that describe my area and what I do.  ActiveRain has also permitted me to merge the benefits of the blog format with my static web sites.  It's been a good partnership.

LennWATCH AND WAIT.  I don't expect any real surprises.  Just more Google quality search marketing.

Kent.  I'm sure that's Google's plan too.  Mine too.  My fingers are crossed.

I think Google is always changing, and sometimes they even let us know.  But you're right, Lenn:  quality content is the major indicator of ranking high in SEO.

April.  The best thing I know is that I know that I don't know a lot of what I wished I knew.

Lenn--Great post and very interesting discussion because of it.  I will be very interested in you response to Jan #74.  We sometimes post to our WP blog and then move it over to AR.  Link to our blogs on our websites. Does Google consider this duplicate?  Do you only post here on AR?

Judy.  Thanks.  IMO, Google has heavily favored sites for universities, etc. for years.  Scholarly reports etc. will rank highly even with few back links.

Jan.  Does Google consider publishing to more than one blog site duplication?  Or, do they weigh the original higher.  Or, does Google punish diplicate content for things like doorway sites or skimmers who take huge amounts of published content and republish it on their site/blog??

Google clearly indicated that they will demote the national listing sites that have little content.

My IDX is not indexed.  In fact, many of the IDX sites that can be indexed violate a patent and one of these days. . . .

Pat.  I can't answer about what Google thinks.  That's above my pay grade.  What I think is that I think that Google gives more weight to the post that was published first.  I haven't seen any indication that Google is going to punish sites that syndicate content like the AR outside web sites or Reblogs.  But, I'm no expert.

I post here, on RealTown and on my own web site(s).  Lots of them.

Sylvie.  I would hope so.  I suspect that we're too small for Google to notice.

It seems that the directory sites like zilow, homes.com, realestate.com etc. still dominate the Jacksonville sites which have next to nothing in terms of content.  Been battling that for years.
