Smokers beware....Hawaii just became the 14th state to become a smoke free state on November 16th at virtually all public places and workplaces.

Smoking now will be prohibited anywhere they serve food and drinks including restaurants, bars, lu'au parties and hotel lobbies.  Smoking is banned from anywhere there are two walls and a roof including bus stops and semi-enclosed places.  Other public places involve outdoor stadiums and amphitheaters.  Smoking is allowed 20 feet away from entrances and windows to enclosed areas and public places.  Not even next to the lifeguard stand on the beach unless you are 20 feet away because that is considered a workplace and there is still further talk about a total ban from all public beaches and parks in the near future.  Most prohibited areas shall have prominently posted no-smoking signs.

Businesses in violation will be fined:

  • $100 for the first offense
  • $200 for the second offense
  • $500 for every offense after

Individuals will be fined $50.

The state has set up a hotline for complaints and feedback.  They don't want smokers to feel discriminated against and say that they want to educate smokers more on the negative effects that smoking has.  They hope that this will set a course for more smokers to become aware and hope that more smokers will want to quit on their own.  This is for an even healthier Hawaii.  Is your state smoke free?

Kengo, I am not positive that Connecticut is completely smoke free, but many of what you state in your blog, does also apply here.  So my assumption is that we are, and have been so for a few years now. Initially when these rules went into effect here, I was waiting for a big outcry from the smokers, but strangely enough it didn't happen.  It will be interesting to see if Hawaii has the same reaction.

I'm a smoker and I think that this is a good law. No more smokey bars and restaurants which will make a big difference for others that don't smoke. Even for smokers, I think they will enjoy sitting in an enclosed area that has clearer, cleaner air. No complaints from me.

It's about time! Now they need to actually enforce the law since I still see violators all over the place!

Washington is smoke free too (except for the Indian casinos)  It's an improvement to go to eat and not come out smelling like cigarettes.  There was an outcry from the bar owners and smoke shops (particularly cigar shops).  Some bars and non-Indian casinos have closed.

This is a good thing even if you smoke. You just get used to it and better for everyone.

Kengo.

Well, we are heading in the right direction now. Your restrictions in Hawaii are rather far-reaching which is good. Ours here in Nevada are coming behind yours, yet it's a large accomplishment that we got something in the books in the first place considering the clout of the casino industry.

Well guys, sorry to crash your party. I don't smoke cigarettes but I love to smoke a cigar on the golf course or playing poker. With this law,I think it infringe on my right. MY right to choose, to smoke or not to smoke. Anyways on a lighter note, dentist will be droping thier rates.

Maryland is going smoke free in Feb 08....I also have a house in NC - I don't think smoking will ever be banned there - you go to a restaurant in NC and they ask if you want to sit in the smoking or chain smoking section.  (joking--but really they should, how can you divide smoking from non smoking with a piece of lattice)

As smoker I have to say that I'm not to thrilled about it. However the law is the law and I'll have to make the adjustment when I go to Hawaii this summer. Thanks for the heads up.

I think this is a good trend. Chicago went smoke free a few years back and it was a great improvement. The entire State of Illinois goes smoke free on January 1, 2008. It will be nice to be able to go to any restaurant anywhere and not be concerned about second hand smoke.

I'm curious - are non smokers ready to take up the tax burden that smokers have shouldered for so long?
