What Gilligan's Island Taught Me about Real Estate - Part Three

If you read Part One or Part Two of this series, you'll know that one of my favorite shows when I was growing up was Gilligan's Island.  And how the show can be a great teacher for real estate!

Today's post is about not writing off a home just because it's old.

The theme song from Gilligan's Island is one of the most memorable ones in TV history.  People who weren't even born until years after the show was off the air could most probably sing it and get most of the words right!

But like most things, it has gotten a bit dated.  It's not as edgy as we like our music now.  That's what I was so happy to find this updated version of the Gilligan's Island theme song by the group Bowling For Soup:

So let's get to the part about real estate!

We have so many older homes in most parts of the country.  And it's true what they say - they don't build ‘em like they used to.  But don't just write them off!  Like Bowling Fro Soup's update, you can take an old house that is a bit worn out and dated and reinvent it.

Many times, the cost of the inexpensive older home plus the upgrades you wish to do will be less than a new, similar sized home!

Now I'll admit to being a bit partial.  I live in a 100 year old home.  But with a new kitchen - with stainless and granite.  And new baths.  And so much more character than a new, cookie-cutter home.

I wish we could contain suburban sprawl in our older cities by reigniting a desire in home buyers to look at older, more established towns and neighborhoods - and then updating those homes to today's wants and needs.

Buying an older home - it's the ultimate in recycling!

Hi Richard,

Everything benefits from a little updating (even theme songs).  I love the idea of buying an older home is the ultimate in recycling.

It's interesting that in the Village that I work and live in, the older homes command much more money.  I am currently marketing a Victorian built in 1902 and updated but kept the traditional character for 1.695M
