Bare Feet Iron WillTonight I attended an event hosted by Longwood University, called the Executive in Residence series.  I have been to many of these open to the public events held at Longwood University. Tonight the speaker was James Zumwalt, author of Bare Feet, Iron Will. This is one great example of events that Longwood hosts and offers to the public, free of charge.

Tonight the topic was leaders, who think outside of the box.  He spoke of how he came to write the book.  He talked with amazing passion and emotion.  He spoke of how going to Vietnam over 50 times to talk with and interview Vietnamese soldiers and leaders and how they survived the war. He spoke of how their stories turned into his book.  He spoke of how they thought outside of the box to win at war. He told his stories and the Vietnam soldiers stories to a large room of professors, students, business leaders and visitors from the community.

He spoke of his respect for his father, of his love for his son, of the sadness of the loss of his brother.  He spoke of the stories he heard while researching his book.  He spoke of why he thinks there are winners and losers in war.

As he spoke, people listened, smilled, wiped tears and clapped for his performance.  I am going to get the book and have my two teenage boys read it.  I am going to read it! And I am going to write my list on how I can be a leader that thinks outside of the box.

I hope you had your phone on silence and wasn't reading any text messages :)  It's fun to read something where you have met the author.

Kristal, this book may be a very tough one, because of what it is about.  I will look thru my positive books and send you message with some great recommendations.  And yes, hit the lecture series, here they have all been good.

Nothin' better than a great book, Navona.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm presently rereading Jack Canfield's Success Principles.  So much more is sinking in the second time around.

Navona--Thanks for the recommendation.  I just added the book to my 'Read' list.  I love the opportunity to meet an author or artist in person.
