Frostbite Footrace, Snowshoe Softball, Snow Sculptures and Dog Races...OH MY!

So perhaps our brains are frozen because of what we Alaskans do in the 'spring' months.

This particular set of pictures is from out outing in Anchorage last weekend. The temperature was about oh...ZERO and we bundled up in attempt to defeat cabin fever.

Fur Rendezvous was always a favorite holiday as a kid. I remember bundling up as a family and spending all weekend in our snowsuits, mittens, boots, scarves and the like just to watch the dog races and see the snow sculptures. I even one a prize for a ceramic mouse I entered in the craft festival about 32 years ago.

Hey there DeeDee, we have not been on so much lately but we have so much to share! I remember a long time ago that the committee brought in ice carvers from Japan to to a sculpture. They made a two or three story waterfall with real salmon frozen into the falls. I will have to bribe my parents into letting me get into the old pictures. I remember being mesmerized by that one!

Hi Steve, this seems to be the theme this time of year! There are a lot more activities to do as well like the fur auction (never have gone to that one), the blanket toss, the fur bikini contest (not going to say a word on that one) the miners and trappers ball and a lot more.

Larry & Jacque, I’ve been to Alaska several times to fish for halibut and salmon. It’s always been in the summer months … even then it felt like ZERO to me. Locals were wearing tank tops and shorts and I was wearing thermals. Clearly you all get used to the snow, the cold, and the darkness.

So when are the "warm" months?  and how "warm" are the warm months?

Kathleen, nice to 'see' you again! When you are on the ocean for Halibut, it feels a lot colder with the moisture. When we run the rivers for salmon is is the same. Combining the wind and the water makes for a much cooler environment. Inland it is warmer. :) You can normally acclimate pretty fast. As far as the darkness goes, in the summer we don't get darkness. It looks like twilight but we can still be in the ocean fishing with no lights and can see at midnight. It makes up for some of the winter months.Next time you come up let us know.

What is the largest Halibut you have caught?

Hi Tammy, the warmest part of our summer is June-mid August. We get up to about 75 on the really nice days but our heat is a bit different. It is dry and feels warmer than it reads on the thermometer. Mum and I take a mum and daughter trip to GA,TN, AL & FL every fall and your 55 feels like our seventy.
